How Old Am I, Really?

How we count someone's age can be different across cultures. This calculator uses the most common system in many Western countries. In this system, your age goes up on your birthday. So someone who is 3 years and 11 months old is considered 3, then they turn 4 on their next birthday in a month.

In some cultures, age is counted by years living, with or without the current calendar year included. So a 20-year-old would be the same age as someone in their 21st year of life. In traditional Chinese age counting, babies are born at 1 year old, and get a year older at Chinese New Year instead of on their birthday. So a baby born the day before Chinese New Year would be 2 days old, but 2 years old two days later.

The way this calculator displays months and days can get confusing, especially when the start date is the end of a month. For example, we'd say Feb. 20 to March 20 is one month. But if we count Feb. 28, 2022 to March 31, 2022, there are two ways to calculate the age:

  • Counting Feb 28 to March 28 as one month gives us 1 month + 3 days
  • Counting Feb. 28 and March 31 as end of month gives us 1 month Both seem reasonable. This happens for dates like April 30 to May 31 too. It's confusing because months have uneven days. This calculator goes with the first method.
