11 Tender Bedtime Prayers for Couples

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Remember bedtime prayers? Did you know you can have bedtime prayers as an adult? As a married couple? Yes, you can!

Praying as a couple at bedtime allows you to end each day together, united in relationship with God. You can use this time of prayer to unburden yourself from the worries of the day and connect with one another. Jesus told us that each day would have enough problems and trouble, but he also promised:

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11.28, NIV).

You can embrace this rest as you and your spouse pray together before you go to sleep. These five tender bedtime prayers can serve as a template for you to try. Don’t worry if it’s been awhile since you’ve said bedtime prayers. If it feels awkward, let it pass, as it’s just you and your spouse and God.

We never really know what tomorrow will bring. We can schedule and plan and have t0-do lists, but plans can unravel and schedules can be interrupted. Wouldn’t it be helpful to prepare for each tomorrow with prayer before your head hits the pillow?

How much more strengthened would you be if you prayed with your husband or wife each night?

I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4.13, NIV).

Does tomorrow look like a stressful day, or one filled with emotional struggles? Prepare tonight before you go to sleep with the words of this scripture filling your mind. Praying at bedtime as a couple will allow you to face the future with confidence and peace.

The first five prayers are arranged by seasons of life together and the latter six cover a variety of situations, both good and bad, that couples may face. Please do alter the prayers as you see fit in order to match your current situation. Let these five prayers serve as a springboard for your own prayers together as a couple. Feel free to share your requests at the end of this article.

A Short Bedtime Prayer for Couples

Dear God, we come together to pray to you before we go to sleep. We confess we haven’t prayed together, except over our meals, for quite some time. But we’re praying to you now.

We each have a daunting day tomorrow, so we ask you give us rest tonight and strength for tomorrow. May we both bring you glory in our words and deeds. In the loving name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Bedtime Prayer for a Newlywed Couple

Dear Father God, we’ve only been married for a few months, but our pastor suggested we pray together at bedtime. I have to admit, Lord, I haven’t done bedtime prayers since I was a kid. But we’re committed to starting again now, tonight.

I pray for my wife/husband. May she/he get renewing, deep sleep tonight. The job demands are piling up this week and tomorrow looks to be even more stressful. Let her/his sleep be full and uninterrupted so she/he can be prepared for what the schedule brings.

I pray for myself tonight too, Lord. I’m entering a new phase of training and responsibility and I want to do well. But I’m very stressed. I want to put in the hard work but I want to be able to spend time with my spouse. Right now, it seems like a constant battle.

I ask for the tension to be relieved in a positive manner. I pray for our love for each other to be real each day. I ask that as we pray, you bring us closer to you. Give us rest from our weariness Lord, and may we awaken to your love in the morning. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Bedtime Prayer for a Young Couple

Dear God, we come to you in prayer as we head to bed. We just said bedtime prayers with our children, so now we do the same together.

We ask for your help and guidance so we can be good parents. Enable us to live as good examples for our kids. Let them see us as we disagree, as we reconcile and listen to one another, and as we love each other.

By how we live, may our children know they are in a secure family, safe, and at peace. By how we pray, may we each know we are loved and accepted by you, so that our love for each other deepens and strengthens.

Lord, please, give us deep sleep tonight. It’s been a rough couple of days with sickness and “monsters under the bed,” and so forth. We are so tired we can barely keep our eyes open and pray this prayer. Give us rest, in the name of the One who is Love and Peace, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Bedtime Prayer for Middle-Aged Married Couple

Dear Jesus, what a gift you have given to us to enable us to pray to you in the evening, together, as a couple. We’ve been doing it for a number of years now and we give you thanks for how it has helped our marriage.

How much more burdensome it would have been to face all the calamities we’ve face without the mercy and strength we’ve garnered as we’ve prayed together? We’ve shared struggles in our lives with you in prayer that we might not have shared with each other, outside of prayer each evening.

Thank you Lord for the intimacy you’ve created between us as we’ve been vulnerable in your presence. We’ve each grown in our compassion for one another, understanding more deeply what we each have faced each day. Sharing our trials in prayer opened our hearts for each other further.

We pray tonight for our community and our leaders. We pray for those in need, that you be Provider for them. We ask your safety over our growing children as they prepare for the next phase in their lives. We pray for ourselves, Lord–give us rest and health and grace. In the hope-filled reality of the presence of Jesus, Amen.

Bedtime Prayer for an Older Married Couple

Father in heaven, we pray to you as we head to bed. We may very well pray to you again in a few hours when we awaken again in the middle of the night. At this stage of life, it’s a blessing to just say your name and enter into a prayer connection with our Lord.

We are filled with gratitude for how you’ve worked in our lives over these past many years. By your guidance and wisdom, we’ve raised our children in adults, survived several health scares, dealt with job loss and gain, endured financial strain and success, and near-constant change.

I don’t think we could have done all that if we weren’t praying to you regularly at bedtime. Knowing our day has been unburdened on you and tomorrow has been lifted into your hands has brought us such peace in our hearts.

Our minds rest easier after we pray at night together. By now, we can almost sense when each other really needs to take the lead in prayer and when the other just listens and affirms the prayer. How we’ve grown in our love for each other over the years and through our shared love for you in prayer!

We pray tonight for health and longevity, for strong and curious minds, for faithful hearts, and encouraging spirits. We ask this in the name of the One who holds the past, the present, and the future in his hands, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Couple Bedtime Prayer of Gratitude

Father, we are here today to be thankful for the union you have created for us. Your word teaches us that it is not good for man to be alone. Of course, we are always with you, Lord, but we are grateful that you took the time to make both man and woman to complement each other.

We are thankful for the world you have surrounded us with. Thank you for all of your beautiful creations we know are each made with care. We are so honored to see your beauty and light in our everyday lives.

As we go to bed, Father, we want to thank you for blessing us with the opportunities that came today. We want to honor you for bringing our family closer together. For making us stronger in our faith and stance against evil.

Lord, we are blessed to have been given each other’s guidance by you. We know that we bring out a side of greatness in each other that we cannot achieve apart. Thank you for being with us and for bringing us together as one. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Couple Bedtime Prayer for Prioritizing Time Together

Dear Lord, our life has become chaotic. We are finding it hard to keep you and our marriage in focus. We are allowing our children and our jobs to take over instead of intentionally creating quiet and peace in our lives.

Father, we ask that you help us create space for you and each other. Lord, help us feel the pull of importance that these activities hold. Help us see the perfect time to put it into our schedules.

Lord, we want to set a good example for our children. We want to show them how to build a marriage that is strong. We want them to see our love and faith grow together and not apart.

Father, tonight we are asking for you to bring prioritizing direction in our lives. Show us the time and the funds we need to prioritize our marriage and our faith. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Couple Bedtime Prayer for Love in Trouble

Father, tonight we are praying to you as a couple who is concerned for the love we have for each other. Our lives have taken us away from the foundation we built. It has separated us and we are both lost. Lord, we ask that you reignite the love that our union began around.

Father, I know that we are supposed to put you first in our marriage. We are here today, Lord, to start. Instead of ignoring the problem, or walking away from our promises, we want to look towards your greatness.

Help us remember what brought us together, Lord. Remind us that you have a plan for our marriage. You have created a lifetime of joy and opportunity for us, Father. Help us remember all of the happiness our love once created.

We ask that you settle our fears and pain. We ask that you guide us in the direction of your love. We do not want to lose our marriage, Lord. We want it to become an example of what a marriage can be for those around us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Couple Bedtime Prayer for Cherishing Each Other

Father, we are here tonight to ask you to open our eyes. We have grown complacent in our love for you and each other. We woke up today, Father, and realized we need a change. Father, we ask that you help us cherish each other.

Lord, I ask that you give us days filled with all the reminders of how you care for us. Father, also help us see how we in turn care for each other. Make the tasks we do for each other so obvious that they cannot be denied. Open our eyes to the opportunities you have presented to us and remind us to give you all of our praise.

Father, we know that we are two pieces to one heart. We have created a life together and we want you at the center of it.

Remind us, Father, when we get put off by our spouse, to only see the blessings they have to offer. Help us cherish our spouse with all the blessings we have to offer as well, Lord.

Guide us to respect everything that we have built together, Lord. We want it to become everything you have envisioned for us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Couple Bedtime Prayer for Marriage Challenges

Father, we come together today because we have hit a road block. We both feel it, Lord, and we are here to ask that you take it away. This road block is causing problems in our marriage. It is shifting us down a path that we know you do not want for us. Father, we ask that you step in and show us a different direction.

I know I can feel the unease that this road block has created between our marriage. I know it is not something simple and it has taken on many forms. We have let it sit with us far too long and it is time to send it away.

We ask that you give us the strength to send our road block away, Lord. We ask that you give us the patience we need to get around and past this road block.

Father, grant us understanding and compassion for each other during this time. Help us let go of any resentment and anger that we have been holding onto for far too long, Lord.

Father, we are finally giving our marriage over to you. We will wait and be patient for your message. We will do our best to interpret what it is that we need to do next. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Couple Bedtime Prayer for Spiritual Strength

Dear Lord, my spouse and I come to you today with sorrow filled hearts. We have discovered that our union has not been guided by the Holy spirit, but instead our own will. Father, we are here to ask for your forgiveness. We want to fill our marriage with your spirit and love.

Lord, we ask to be consumed by your spiritual strength. We ask that you open doors for our union. That these doors hold opportunities to grow in our faith. We ask that you fill us with your gifts of peace and love.

Father, thank you for this opportunity to include you in our marriage. Thank you for providing us with the knowledge to know that we need you in our lives. We are forever thankful for the spirit you have placed inside of us and we will do our best to nourish it and grow its power. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

It seems natural to say bedtime prayers with children doesn’t it? Or maybe younger adults.

But why wouldn’t we do the same thing as adults? Even more so when we get married! Relationships are hard enough, so why not bring in additional aid through prayer to God?

Bedtime prayers for couples are a great tool for both husbands and wives. Maybe you’ve had a rough day. Or perhaps the two of you had an argument. Scripture reminds us that, “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry” (Ephesians 4.26, NIV).

It’s really difficult to remain upset with your spouse when you’re next to each other praying in the presence of God the Father. And sleep is never restful when we’re angry or wound up about something in our life. Prayer with your husband or wife can de-escalate the emotions and bring each of you peace.

“A heart at peace gives life to the body” (Proverbs 14.30, NIV).

Sleep is important for our body, mind, and spirit. Bedtime prayers for couples can be a terrific habit to build into your married life. We can develop so many bad habits, so why not take this opportunity to develop a good, lasting habit? It’s good for your marriage, and for your relationship with God.

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Psalm 4.8, NIV).

Sleep brings rest. Prayer brings peace. Praying as a couple before you go to sleep unites peace and rest and that’s good for everyone in your life.
