8 Caring Prayers For Broken Bones

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Do you have a broken bone and need to pray about it?

I remember the first time I drove an ATV many years ago.  I was on my uncle’s farm in the summer between my eighth and ninth grade years in school.  My uncle had plenty of fairly flat land so I thought it would be a good spot to ride.  My uncle showed me how to operate the three-wheeled vehicle and then I was off and vrooming around, enjoying the speed and the wind blowing in my face.

I rode around for at least thirty minutes, getting more and more confident in the throttle and not so tentative.  I eventually started riding full out and was laughing with delight, until I noticed I was heading right toward a barbed wire fence.  I had gotten so wrapped up in riding I did not pay attention to where I was.

I couldn’t brake or I would fly off the vehicle into the fence.  I couldn’t swerve for the same reason.  All of this was happening in split second timing.  So, what I did was see the fence rapidly approaching and jumped off, while the ATV crashed into the fence post.  As I jumped off, I put my arms out to brace my landing on the dirt.

And that’s when I broke my right forearm.

When you, or someone you know, breaks a bone, it is always painful.  Sometimes a fracture is minor, like with a broken toe, or it can be a major health problem, like in the case of a compound fracture of a leg.  In whatever case you find yourself, you need prayer!

I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak” (Ezekiel 34.16, NIV).

These eight caring prayers for broken bones are written for the most common bones we tend to break as humans.  Of course, you can insert the specific details of your case to personalize each prayer.  You can pray these prayers for yourself or for someone you know.  You may wish to share these prayers with people who are recovering from a broken bone, so they can be encouraged as they pray.

Prayer For a Broken Toe

Dear God, I think I’ve broken my toe!  I was walking to the bedroom to go to bed, and in the dark I didn’t see the bookcase.  I thought I just stubbed my toe in a bad way because it was throbbing, but this morning, my toe is swollen and there is major bruising and discoloration in the toenail.

I have taped the toe to the one next to it to stabilize it and have put ice on it to relieve the swelling.  I’m going to see my doctor later this morning.  I don’t think there’s much to do about it–no cast or anything, but I’d like for him to have a look at it.  I pray for healing in my broken toe, as it is painful to walk on right now.

Please help my toe to heal properly, Lord, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Dear Jesus, I am in so much pain!  I accidentally dropped a concrete block on my foot and broke it.  The doctor showed me the x-ray and it is most definitely broken.

I ask for you to heal my foot and mend the bones back together so I can walk like normal again.  My foot will have to be immobilized for several weeks in order for the bones to heal.  I give you thanks that I won’t need surgery!

I ask you, O Lord, to heal my broken foot day after day.  I ask for this healing in your powerful name, Lord Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For a Broken Ankle

God, my ankle is broken and my doctor said he’s going to have to move the bones back into place so they will heal appropriately.  He said he will give me a local anesthetic to numb the pain in order to do this procedure.

All I know is I am in pain!  Please bring relief and healing to my ankle, Lord, as I broke it in a major way.  I won’t be able to walk on it for quite a few weeks, which is going to affect my work.  I know broken bones take time to heal, so I pray for patience in this healing process.

I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For a Broken Leg

Dear God in heaven, please help me.  I was in a car accident and my leg is seriously broken.  They are taking me to surgery in a few minutes to repair the damage.  I don’t know how long the healing will take or how long I won’t be able to walk, but I’m very concerned.

I pray for the surgery to get the bones back into their proper place.  I pray for there to be no infections of any kind. I want my broken leg to heal fully.  I ask for your healing hand on my bones, Lord.  Give me strength, in the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Prayer For a Broken Hip

Dear Lord, I come to you in prayer for my grandmother.  She fell yesterday and has broken her hip.  The doctors are not sure if she will need a hip replacement or if the break will heal.  I pray for their diagnosis to be precise so my grandmother will not have undue pain.

Help her, Lord, in the midst of the pain she is experiencing.  She can’t move around at all right now and I’m sure that is frustrating to her.  Please heal her broken hip, whether that’s through surgery or therapy or other medical means.  I know your healing hand will be at work.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Prayer For a Broken Wrist

Lord, I have a broken wrist and I’m not happy about it.  My job requires me to use the computer quite a bit so this is going to hamper what I can do. Please help me to have a better attitude so I can heal moving forward.

I’m glad I was able to get to a doctor quickly so I did not do any further damage to my bones.  I’m thankful for the pain medications doing their job.  I’m thankful that we have insurance to cover this injury.

I’m praying to you Lord because I just want to have full use of my wrist and hand again.  I want my wrist to be fully healed, which I know takes time.  Hear my prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For a Broken Arm

God, I grew up being active and playing sports and never had a broken bone.  I thought I would make it through life without any broken bones.  That lasted until yesterday when I fell off a ladder at my house.

I have broken my arm in two places and will have a cast on it for at least 6-8 weeks, according to my doctor.  I am thankful for modern medicine and all that it is doing to lessen my pain and make sure my broken bones mend properly.

I am praying to you, Lord, because I know you are the Great Physician and the Healer.  I pray, asking for you to heal my broken arm.  I pray this in the strong name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For a Broken Collarbone

Dear Lord, my daughter fell off the swings this morning so we took her to the doctor and now we know she has a broken collarbone.  Thankfully the pain medications have helped her stop screaming, as she was in so much pain and scared.

She’s not going to like the fact that she has to have her arm in a sling for a few weeks, so help her understand that it is a part of healing.  She is very active, so being forced into inactivity will be hard.  I pray for her patience and her healing.  I ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Final Thoughts

When our bones are broken, the experience can shatter our feelings of invincibility.  We see the outward signs of the damage in the swelling and bruising.  We feel the damage in the throbbing and pain.  But we don’t actually see the damage, as the broken bones are beneath the skin.

Given this, we also are not going to see the healing that is taking place each day, over time, as the bones begin to mend themselves together.  Not being able to see the healing process can sometimes be frustrating.  But we need to be patient–healing is happening!  We can be encouraged as we echo the prayer of a prophet:

“Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed;
save me and I will be saved,
for you are the one I praise” (Jeremiah 17.14, NIV).

While broken bones take time to heal, it can be a way to instill in us a sense of giving control over to God and letting him guide us to a better future.  We can rest and not put additional stress on the broken bones.  In doing so, we recognize our trust that God is at work to heal us.
