Dear Father God, I just came back from the doctor’s office and I have been diagnosed with asthma. I couldn’t understand why I was so often short of breath until I went to see her.
Now I have the understanding, but I also have realized I now have a chronic condition that I will have to manage each and every day. I am going to have to get new health habits and deal with daily medicine doses and so forth.
Help me to wrap my mind around this news and help me to accept that this is a reality I have to handle. I can’t ignore this now that I know. A Parent’s Prayer About Asthma
Dear God, I pray for my son who has asthma. He’s being a real trooper about it all, but I can see the disappointment in his eyes and hear the frustration in his voice from time to time, especially when he has to use his inhaler in front of his friends.
At his age, he doesn’t want to feel different than everybody else, but it’s hard to hide when you can’t breathe properly. Help his friends to understand and protect him from being bullied because of his condition. I pray that he has his inhaler with him at all times. I can’t bear to think of what would happen if he has an attack and doesn’t have that with him.
Help me to be a calm presence with him and encourage him however I can. Sometimes I’m not sure what to say as his parent. Hear my prayer and guide me through Jesus Christ, Amen.
A Doctor’s Prayer About Asthma
Dear God, before I begin my work day, I want to pause and pray for each of my patients today who have asthma. A couple of them are going to find out that they have it today, after I talk with them. Others already know and have been dealing with it for months and years.
Enable me to be a reassuring presence with each of them. Help me also to be firm where I need to be when it comes to them managing their condition. I can’t do it for them, but I can underscore how important it is to be vigilant.
I pray that you will help each person see that asthma is a very treatable and manageable condition. Although it can’t be cured, it can be handled with attentiveness and awareness each day. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Final Thoughts
Having asthma, or any chronic health condition, is not what anyone wants for their life, or for their loved one. But asthma is a condition that affects millions of people and so if you are someone with it, you can know that you, truly, are not alone in what you face.
You can take comfort in knowing that God is aware of you and what you have. God knows how you must be diligent in taking responsibility for your care. On those days when it seems too much, take encouragement from the Apostle Paul:
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why for Christ’s sake I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12.9-10, NIV).
God’s power becomes manifest in the midst of our weakness. God’s grace really is sufficient to pull us through those tough days. As you pray, let yourself be open to God and how God can strengthen you and give you peace. Remember, you are not alone in this. God is with you and He loves you.
