5 Meaningful Prayers For Your Dying Husband

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Marriage is a beautiful gift you hope that you never have to see your partner die. But unfortunately one of you will your husband may have gotten in an accident or maybe sick or just dying of old age. No matter what’s happening. The Lord is with you as your husband is dying. Never hesitate to pray for your dying husband.

Losing your husband, must be one of the most difficult things a woman can experience. I can’t pretend to fully understand what you’re going through. No one can understand it until they’ve lived through it themselves.

However, I can offer a beacon of hope. In the book of Philippians St. Paul said,

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far” (Philippians 1:21-23, NIV).

St. Paul would have rather died than live so that he could be with Christ. This means your husband will soon experience a bliss unimaginable by our finite human minds. He will be united with our creator and filled with the peace and joy of everlasting life.

Even though you know your husband is going to be in good hands, it doesn’t mean your heartache and/or anger isn’t valid. You have every right to feel any emotion you want to. You should bring everything you’re feeling to God.

Lay down your burdens at the foot of the cross. He will gladly take them and help you as you care for your dying husband and grieve his loss.

I have given you 5 prayers for your dying husband, but feel free to customize them to your specific situation. This community is here to be prayer warriors for you! Please leave prayer requests in the comments so we can pray with you!

Short Prayer For A Dying Husband

Lord, my husband is dying. I never thought I’d have to watch my husband suffer so greatly. It’s destroying me to see him in so much pain. I know you will be there to welcome my husband with open arms, but it doesn’t make the process of watching him die any easier.

Please be with him now and at the hour of his death. Amen.

Prayer For A Peaceful Death For Your Dying Husband

Lord, please help my husband to have a peaceful death. It’s been so hard to watch him suffer. I know he desires to be with you. It’s been a really hard process, but I am ready to let him go and he’s ready to go see You.

We have solace and peace with his death because of Jesus’ words in Scripture.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this” (John 11:25-26, NIV)?

My husband is a strong Christian. He strives to love you above all else so we trust that even though his Earthly body may die, he will live forever with You in Heaven. May he suffer no longer may he just rest in your arms.

Lord, Your will is our peace and finally we’ve made peace with (Name’s) death. We’ve been angry and sad. We’ve mourned the time we are losing together, but we know that this is your will and that He will be with you soon in eternity.

Even though I have peace about the situation I’m still struggling. I don’t want him to suffer anymore. It is terrible to watch, but I can’t help but be selfish because I want him to stay with me as long as he can.

Thank you for the blessing of our marriage and for the privilege it’s been to care for (Name) while he’s dying. May the peace of the Lord be with (Name) always. In Your name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer For Strength As Your Husband Is Dying

Lord, I need strength. My husband is dying right before my eyes. This isn’t something I imagined would happen even though I know we all die eventually. I just hoped that I’d go first.

In our marriage vows we said in sickness and in health that we would stand by each other. Well, here’s the sickness part and I am here. I am happy to be here for him to be his support and make his last (months/weeks/days) easier.

However I am still heartbroken. I don’t want to live without him. Lord, You are my rock and my salvation. But I love my husband so deeply. He leads me closer to you and I don’t want to live without him. I need your strength to continue to support him. I feel weak inside, but I know that he is hurting and suffering so I can’t show him my suffering. I need to be strong for him.

May these words from Scripture forever be on my lips:

“You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress,” (Psalm 59:9, NIV).

“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble” (Psalm 59:16, NIV).

Help me to love him more deeply each day through all of this pain. Lord, I love you above all else, and I know that when my husband is gone, that I will still have you. Help me to have solace in this. In Your name I pray Amen.

Prayer For Acceptance Of Your Husband Dying

Lord, my husband is dying. I need help accepting that his death will be soon. At first, we had hope. We thought he could get better, but it’s not clear that’s not in your plan. Please help me to accept that he won’t be with me anymore.

We have been together for so long. I’m devastated to find out that I’ll be here without him. I don’t know how to go on without my husband loving and supporting me. I know I’ll only be able to get through this if I stay close to You. You are the only one who is going to be able to bring me solace.

As strange as it is to say this, watching him suffer has also been a gift. (Name) suffers so bravely. He is a holy man who loves and honors you even in death. The veil between Heaven and Earth is thinning.

“‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ the things God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9, NIV).

Help us to accept that (Name) will be experience all the good things You have prepared for Him that we could never even fathom.

We have encountered You in new ways and for that I am grateful. Please bless our marriage as we enjoy this final time together. I don’t want my husband to die, but I must accept he is going to very soon. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

A Prayer For The Kids Of Your Dying Husband

Lord, my husband is dying. I am struggling, but I worry even more deeply for our child(ren). They are losing their father. No one should ever be without their dad, but of course, death is inevitable and they knew this would happen eventually.

Help them as they struggle to accept that their father will no longer be in their lives physically. May they always turn to you with their every worry. I know they must rely on you to carry them through this. I worry they will become angry with you and do the opposite.

Please guard their hearts so that they will stay close to You during this time. You are here to comfort us always. May my kid(s) have peace knowing that their father will be united with You in heaven. He will be experiencing everlasting joy.

When my child(ren) misses their father, remind them that they have a heavenly Father who will never leave them. When they are close to You they will be close their earthly father. That’s the closest we can be, this side of heaven.

I love you and trust you will provide for all of their needs during this difficult time. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

Losing your husband is going to be one of the most challenging, if not most challenging, thing in your life. When you are struggling, turn to the Lord and share your deepest grievances with Him.

Turn to the Scriptures to hear Him speaking lovingly to you.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV).

The Lord will support you as your care for your dying husband and continue to do so after he departs as well.
