9 Powerful Prayers During Natural Disasters

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Are you facing a natural disaster and need to pray?  Other than “Help me, God!” are you not sure what to pray for?

These nine powerful prayers during a natural disaster are focused on a weather threat being eminent. I have collected the most likely scenarios for such events and written prayers to help you.  Of course, you can easily change the words to fit your specific situation, as needed.

With nearly 7,000 natural disasters happening all over the world each year, it is likely that your life, or the life of someone you know, will be threatened by one soon.  It would make sense to pray to God about such weather concerns before they ever come your way.  And definitely, if a natural disaster is headed your way!

You may also gain strength by praying for safety and protection during storms. In time, you can receive peace by praying for things to go well.

He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous”  (Matthew 5.45 ,NIV).

It’s important to remember that just because you follow Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, it doesn’t mean that the effects of living in a broken world and broken creation won’t touch your life at some point.  As the Apostle Matthew reminds us, things happen in life regardless of how right we are with God, or not.

So, praying is more about getting you close to God and placing your dependency upon God. When we pray, we pray in trust and faith.  As you hopefully survive what you are dealing with right now, we invite you to share what happened in the comments section at the end of this article.  Give praise to God!

Short Prayer During Natural Disasters

Dear Lord, bless each and every person affected by this natural disaster, grand us encouragement, strength, fortitude, patience, and insight as we struggle with our losses. Surround us with your love and compassion. Help us pick up the pieces and create a new future for ourselves, our families, and our community. I ask this all through the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer During a Flood

Dear Lord, the levee close to us is about to break and that means there’s going to be flooding.  I can see first responders trying to shore it up with an emergency berm and sandbags but I don’t think that’s going to last very long.

We have to get out of here because there’s no way we can survive all that water rushing down our street–we’re too close to the levee.  I pray for our house, that it won’t get totally destroyed.  We’re trying to load up as much important stuff as we can and heading out soon.  I pray our family survives all of this.

We’re getting uprooted because of a flood coming our way and I don’t know what we’re going to do if we lose everything.  I pray for protection and safety and financial provision.  Help us, O Lord.  In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

Prayer During a Wildfire

Lord God, all this dry weather is now coming back to bite us in the rear end.  There’s a wildfire blazing on the other side of the ridge from us.  I can smell the smoke and see the flames from here.

The authorities haven’t issued an evacuation order yet, so we’re not sure whether to go ahead and start packing up and leave, or wait to see if they can contain it before it gets too close to us.  We’re under a lot of stress right now, Lord, and we could use your peace and discernment.

I don’t want to leave if we can help it, but I don’t want to stay and be in grave danger, either.  I just don’t want to lose everything we’ve worked for over the years in our home.  We planned on living here for quite a while.  Now it’s all in danger.  Help us prepare for what we need to do.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer During a Hurricane

God, we are hunkered down in our basement and praying to you as the hurricane is blowing through.  It may not be a major one, but it’s bad enough.  The wind is howling outside and I pray our roof stays attached.  I also pray that any falling trees don’t hit our house.

There wasn’t an official order to evacuate because this hurricane was a low-level one, but I’m stressing out now about our decision to stay.  I hope we didn’t place our family’s lives in danger.  Please protect us and our house and our neighbors.  I’ve never been in the middle of a hurricane, but this is very frightening.

Hear my plea, and hear my prayer, O God, through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer During a Tornado

Father God, we don’t have much time before a tornado is going to blow through.  We went from a tornado watch to a tornado warning in a matter of minutes.  There is no time to drive away and escape it.   It’s coming our way and it’s coming now.

We’re all wedged into our bathroom with pillows and a mattress, ready to cover up for protection.  We’ve done all we can do to be safe, with hardly any time to react, God.

I pray to you now on behalf of my family and our neighbors.  Keep us safe, keep us alive.  I pray the damage will not be devastating but with a tornado, it’s hard to guess what will happen.  We just don’t want to die, Lord.  I pray all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer During a Blizzard

Dear Jesus, this blizzard is not slowing down. Instead, it’s increasing in intensity.  We are going to be literally covered up in snow.  There hasn’t been this much snow in this area in dozens and dozens of years.  I don’t know how we’re going to survive this.

We’ve still got electricity but I think it’s going to go out soon because there’s no way the power lines can withstand this blizzard’s winds.  I worry about our fireplace chimney getting covered with snow, which would mean we can’t use it for heat.

Please keep us safe, God.  There’s nothing else for us to do.  We can’t leave in the middle of this thing–we have to stay put.  I pray for your peace to surround us.  Keep us warm, keep us alive Lord.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer During an Ice Storm

God, thank you for getting me close to home; I’m almost there and I am grateful to be alive.  I just want to be in my home safe and warm and with my family.

This ice storm blew up on me while I was halfway home and there was no place to stop and I’m not sure that would have been smart anyway.  Traffic slowed to a snail’s pace and people were sliding off the side of the road every which way. Thank you, Lord, for my truck and for good tires and safe driving.

Please help me make it this last mile to home.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Prayer For Disaster Relief Workers

Lord God, I pray for all of the disaster relief workers who are coming our way to help us during this storm, and for what will happen afterward.

Give them safe travel and bless them for their sacrifice of time and energy to help people they don’t even know.  We are going to need all the help we can get.  Everything is such a mess and we don’t have the equipment to move everything out of the way.

I make this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer During a Drought

God, it’s getting bad now.  We’ve been in a drought for several weeks now.  We’ve done all we can do to save the crops from completely being lost but we are literally–in every way–out of water.

We need a miracle, Lord.  I mean, we need some serious rain when every weather person says there is no rain coming our way.  I know our farm needs the water.  The lakes and ponds need the water or everything around us is going to die.

We won’t just lose our way of life–we’ll lose our lives.  Please send the rain, Lord God.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Prayer After a Landslide

God in heaven, I don’t believe what just happened!  There was a landslide and half our street is overrun with dirt and chunks of earth.

I’ve always enjoyed the view of the mountainside out of our backyard, but now half of that mountainside is in our backyard.  It looks like we’ve got some damage to our house and so do our neighbors.  The guy’s house down the street a bit completely lost his home.

I’m still in shock I think but I’m praying to you for guidance and direction as I don’t know what to do now.  Do I call the insurance people?  Do I start digging dirt away from my house.  I’m just glad we’re alive because that was terrifying to see a wave of dirt just tumbling down toward us.

Hear my pray, God, and show me what to do next.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

We may see natural disasters on television and stand amazed at how brutal the weather can be, and the damage it can do to people’s homes and lives.

But when we’re facing a natural disaster, things come into sharper focus, don’t they?  We understand a lot better what it means to place our trust in God.  We gain perspective on the importance of prayer.  We realize that scripture like what the Psalmist writes are of deep comfort:

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday”  (Psalm 91.1-6, NIV).

When a natural disaster is coming down on you, you know that it’s only God you can turn to.  Only God to depend upon and trust.  As you pray these prayers, we pray with you–that you survive and are safe.
