Is your child facing surgery soon? Does your baby have to have surgery and you are nervous about it?
Are you unsure as to what to pray or how to start praying for your toddler’s surgery?
We never like to face the reality that our child has to have surgery. It just doesn’t seem like that is supposed to happen. They are too new to the world and so young, so how could anything be wrong with their health that it requires surgery?
But we also know that we live in an imperfect world and sickness, disease and broken bones are present, even in our children, be they babies, toddlers, or a little older. And so, we want to face this with God behind us and before us in prayer.
We hope these nine encouraging prayers will prove helpful to you as you pray for your child having surgery. They cover before, during, and after the surgery. There are prayers for babies, toddlers, and young children. You can easily change the words of any prayer so that it fits your particular circumstances.
Think of these nine prayers as starters to get you going in your prayers to God. When faced with such a serious situation, sometimes our thoughts are scattered. We may not know where to begin in the stress and chaos we face.
As well, these scriptures can be helpful as encouragement to strengthen you, and remind you of God’s love and care for you and your child. You may want to read them out loud before and after you pray.
If you are feeling anxious about your child’s surgery, this scripture may bring peace to you:
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5.7, NIV).
Depending on how involved or major your child’s surgery may be, these words from the Psalmist send comfort to your heart and mind:
“Call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” (Psalm 50.15, NIV).
God is still a healing God and can (and does) heal through medicine and surgery. Even as you recite these truths to yourself, you also may wish to claim them for your child in surgery:
“He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147.3, NIV).
And also:
“But I will restore you to health
and heal your wounds,’
declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 30.17, NIV).
Now that you are fortified with scripture and standing on a strong foundation of God’s Word, you can begin to pray for your child and their surgery. As you pray, may you be filled with God’s peace and comfort. Please share your requests and comments at the end of this article.

Dear God, I pray for my baby who is in surgery right now. The doctors said this surgery is fairly normal for the breathing problem my baby has, but I’m still nervous. I just want her to be able to breathe normally and grow healthy.
I pray for the surgeon and the nurses in the operating room right now, for them to have clear thinking and action. I pray for (baby’s name) to already receive the healing this surgery brings. Thank you for the provision you have given us Lord to have this surgery and not have to wait. I give you thanks in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Dear Lord, I pray for our baby. She has surgery early tomorrow morning. I pray we all get restoring rest tonight because tomorrow is going to be a long day. It hurts my heart to see my baby girl in health distress, so I pray this surgery goes well.

Dear God, our first grader is in the midst of surgery right now. He didn’t like that he would be missing school but he understands this is needed to help him get better. Thank you for the fact that this surgery is pretty straightforward and should take care of the problem.
As I sit here in the waiting room, I pray for the whole team in the operating room. I pray against any infections in my son’s body. I pray for a smooth recovery. I give you thanks for the support I have while this is happening. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Dear God, my little baby is not a baby anymore–he’s up and walking around now. And he has to have surgery soon. I didn’t really think that surgery was a milestone I’d have to mark off for his life at this point. I’m praying to you because I’m concerned, even though I know this is the best option.

Final Thoughts
Whether our child is a baby, a toddler, or a bit older, we want them to be safe and healthy, and protected. Yet, when something happens in their body to require surgery, it can bring up worrisome thoughts about what could happen.
It is in prayer that we can set aside that worry. It is in prayer that we can relinquish control. It is in prayer that we remind ourselves that God is above all and we place our trust in him. It is in prayer that we can best express our love for our child by bringing our child to God in prayer, covering them in God’s love and mercy.
The prophet Isaiah spoke to the Hebrew people in the midst of negative circumstances and yet even in those prophetic words, he also spoke encouragement to his people from God.
As you may worry or fret about your child’s surgery, be certain in God, about God.
“You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26.3, NIV).
As well, let God fill you with strength you do not have right now. Allow the Almighty to lift you up in your emotionally weakened situation and carry you. Remind yourself of God’s presence with you, even now:
“So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41.10, NIV).
God’s promises are true and always come to fruition, even in ways we don’t expect or can foresee. May your child come through surgery well, may their recovery be smooth, and may God receive glory!
