7 Tranquil Prayers For A Hysterectomy

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

At the age of 35 my aunt gave birth to her third child. There were unforeseen severe complications and she had to have an impromptu hysterectomy. It was a very scary experience. We realized very quickly that we should pray for anyone having a hysterectomy.

17 years later a different aunt had a hysterectomy.  She had difficulties with her menstrual cycle for years which put her in extreme pain. She was absolutely thrilled to start menopause because it meant the end of this painful and frustrating part of her life.

Women typically get a hysterectomy if they have heavy and/or painful menstruation, fibroids, endometriosis, or gynecologic cancers. This is a major surgery and requires weeks of rest for recovery.

If you or someone you love is getting a hysterectomy it’s important to lean into the Lord during this time. Deciding on the surgery, undergoing the procedure, and the recovery is a long and strenuous process.

May you and/or your loved one remember the words of David, “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him” (Psalm 28:7-8, NIV).

The Lord will give you the strength to get through this surgery. It will be a difficult journey, but it will hopefully heal you of any menstrual pain you are having. May your trust in Him bring you deep and abiding peace.

I’ve given you 7 prayers for a hysterectomy, but feel free to customize them to your specific situation. Please leave prayer requests in the comments so we can pray with you!

Short Prayer For A Hysterectomy

Lord, I am nervous, but joyful that I am having a hysterectomy. I have been in extreme pain for many years because of my menstrual cycles. Each month comes with debilitating pain and I am thrilled to put that behind me. Please watch over the doctors who will perform my surgery and give me peace. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer For Discerning A Hysterectomy

Lord, my life is not in danger, but I’m considering getting a hysterectomy. There are pros and cons to this procedure so I need you to be my guiding voice in this decision. I have so much pain and feel like this surgery would make my quality of life so much better. However, it is a major surgery and there are many risks and physical and emotional effects of this surgery.

This is a huge decision. I’m anxious and overwhelmed. Please give me Your wisdom, Lord. Help me to soak up the words from the Scriptures as I decide what Your will for me is. “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul” (Psalm 23:1-3, NIV).

I don’t need anything, but You God. Keep me grounded and help me to make the decision that is most glorifying to You. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer Before Surgery

Lord, I am about to have a hysterectomy. This is a scary experience for me. There are things that could go wrong, but I’m trying to focus on the positive. I’m trying not to spiral out of control. Help me to remember that You are in control.

Please bless the hands of the doctors as they work on me. Bless the anesthesiologist who will put me under. Help him/her to stay focused and give me the correct dosage of medicine.

Please help this to be just a routine surgery and to go off without a hitch. Help me to stay calm and trust in you. Ultimately, Lord, I just pray that you protect me during this surgery and that I can come out on the other side glorifying you for your goodness and faithfulness.

May I cling to these words from 2 Corinthians, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV). In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer During Surgery

Lord, (name) is getting a hysterectomy right now. The doctors have told us the surgery will take (amount of time). Help me not to panic if the surgery goes longer than that. I am so nervous that there will be complications.

This is a really big surgery and there are plenty of ways this could go awry. Help me to surrender my fears and worries to you. I lay them at the foot of the cross. I feel like I can’t handle the stress of this so I know I must cast my burdens onto you because I cannot handle this alone.

God, please give the doctors wisdom as they perform (name)’s surgery.  I know they have done this before and will do the best they can to make this surgery a success. Please bless their hands so they can work quickly and accurately.

Please help this to be just a routine surgery and to go smoothly. Help (name) to be calm and courageous. May name cling to the words from the Scriptures, “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord” (Psalm 31:24, NIV).

If something goes wrong during the surgery, please give the doctors wisdom to know how to handle it. Help them to stay calm and respond quickly and accurately to the problem at hand. Lord, I trust in you. Amen.

Prayer After Surgery

Dear God, thank you so much for getting (name) through her surgery. I am so grateful for your protection during the procedure. You have blessed us abundantly. Please help the recovery from surgery to go smoothly. Please make the pain as minimal as possible!

(Name) will surely start getting antsy quickly. (Name) doesn’t like to be idle, so please just help her to remember to use this time of rest to rest in You. Help (name) to embrace this time of recovery as an opportunity to grow in humility and gratitude.

Recovering from surgery is a big cross to bear. Help (name) to be like Jesus and to carry this cross with poise and grace. The Scriptures tell us that when Jesus was weak he had help carrying his cross. “As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross” (Matthew 27:32, NIV). Help (name) to remember that even Jesus needed help. Help her to relinquish her need for control and autonomy by accepting help from others during this difficult time.

I pray there are no post-op complications and that all follow up testing goes according to plan. I know this will be a long road of recovery, but please let it to be uneventful! I know you will be there every step of the way. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer For My Wife Getting A Hysterectomy

Dear God, my wife is getting a hysterectomy. My wife is the most important person in my life so I’m worried about this major surgery. She’s been in so much pain because of her gynecological issues so I am thrilled that this will help heal not only her body, but her soul.

The emotional toll of these issues has burdened her soul. The decision for this surgery is not one that we take lightly, but we know Your hand has guided us here. We have peace with this decision thanks to You, Lord.

Wrap your loving arms around (name) as she recovers. The recovery won’t be easy so please give her the strength to endure this cross. Help her to look to Your Son as an example of bearing suffering. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer For Medical Professionals Performing Hysterectomies

Lord, I lift up all medical professionals who are performing hysterectomies. This cannot be an easy job and so I thank you for those who have chosen this path. May you guide the hands of the medical professionals who are performing surgeries today.

This is a difficult procedure for women to have so I pray you give the medical professionals kind and gentle words to help comfort their patients. May their thoughts, words, and actions reflect You in all they do. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

Unlike my aunt, most hysterectomies are not an emergency so you should have time to think about whether this surgery is the best decision for you or your loved one. Talk with your doctors extensively to make sure it’s the right option, but always invite the Lord into this conversation as well.

When we make decisions with the Lord as our first priority we will never question our decisions. May this passage from Scripture help guide you on your journey to good health and healing, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21, NIV).
