5 Repentant Prayers For Addiction To Video Games

Are you or someone you know trapped in a virtual world and doesn’t know how to get out? Do you feel like your mind is being controlled by video games? Video games can be very addictive and God wants to help.

If someone you love is addicted to video games whether that’s on their computer or their phone you may have started to feel like it was your responsibility to set limits, monitor the clock, or demand that something other than video games can be done.

This can be very frustrating and draining. It’s our human nature to want to fix things like this on our own. But God wants to help. He loves His children and wants to extend that love to you in your current need.

Video game addiction is a real thing and works just like other addictions. While it’s normal to play video games in moderation, video game addiction is possible and it affects the brain making the user want more and more. You have probably seen how it impairs self-control and the individual does not function like others in their daily lives and relationships.

Not only can this problem be draining it can be scary. Just like other addictions it changes the individual and makes him/her feel like a god over your own reality.

We are glad you have turned to God through prayer and hope that these prayers allow you to begin to pray to God in new ways about video game addiction. If you, your child or a loved one is addicted to video games consider guiding them to a therapist to help them deal with this addiction.

Short Prayer For Addiction To Video Games

Heavenly Father, you are the creator of all. God, help me to see the damaging effects that video games are having. Help me to see that this is not a bad habit but a real problem. Help me to identify what this says about the heart. Give strength to overcome this addiction. I surrender this area of addiction to you. Redeem me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer For Son Addicted To Video Games

God, you are good. When I feel so overwhelmed I know this truth stands.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! (Psalm 34:8 ESV)

Father, please help my son he is addicted to video games. I trust in your goodness and I rest in your power to help. Free him from this addiction.

Father, I see how he longs to spend all his time playing these games. He has traded games and his online presence for normal activities of being with friends and school activities. He no longer wants to play sports. Playing video games allows him to feel like he is in control and he lacks seeing your sovereignty anymore.

Father, I not only fear that this addiction has taken over his life but that it has stopped him from drawing near to you.

Gracious God, forgive me as a parent for not setting my son up to succeed. Instead, I set him up to fail because of all of the temptations he faces with technology. I know these decisions did not honor you and I ask that you forgive me.

Give me wisdom on how to move forward with my son’s addiction to video games. I ask that you draw me and my son closer to You as we battle through this addiction.

Father, will you please allow others who have walked this path before me to help? Allow me to be open and honest as I talk about my son’s addiction.

God, I ask you to help lead my family in a way that will free my son of this addiction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer For Daughter Addicted To Video Games

Dear Heavenly Father, you have created my daughter and formed her in your image. I praise you for your loving kindness towards my daughter. I know you love her more than I can even imagine.

Father, you are the head of my home and I am asking now to help with a family issue. My daughter is addicted to video games.

She has been so easily swayed by the things of this world. The video games have given her a false sense of confidence that she thrives on.

Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. (Proverbs 31:30-31 ESV)

I ask that you would instead give her a fear of you. Help her to evaluate her life in regards to what you want. Help her to see her addiction and to repent and turn towards you.

God, she feels like she is in control of these games. When she fails she can start all over again and it just continues to suck her in and gives her a false sense of power. I ask that you help her let go of this control and recognize that your control is a power worth resting in.

God, forgive me for not taking action sooner to help her from not going down this path. Lead my family today in how to help my daughter and her video game addiction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer For Spouse Addicted To Video Games

Mighty God, my spouse is addicted to video games. It is affecting our entire family. You have given each of us roles within marriage and my spouse is struggling to fulfill those roles because of the addiction to video games.

Instead of depending on you my spouse is turning to video games. In the morning they find satisfaction in the video games instead of in you. Convict my spouse and allow him/her to seek forgiveness and change.

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. (Psalm 143:8 ESV)

Gracious God, I’ve noticed that my spouse will turn to the video game after a hard day’s work to find comfort and to feel in control. Instead, I pray that he/she would draw near to you. Help them to take steps to get closer to you rather than wasting time with video games.

God, I pray that you would release my spouse from this addiction. Give me the words and patience to help during this process. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer Of Repentance For Being Addicted To Video Games

God, you are sovereign over all things. You created me for a purpose and I praise you for that.

Right now, God, I’m stuck. I am addicted to video games and I am turning to you in this moment asking that you redeem me. I am so sorry for the time I have wasted playing this game and not investing in the things you have called me to.

God, help me to experience your new mercies in this area.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV)

Father, I ask that you give me wisdom to know what steps to take to be free of this video game addiction. I praise you that I can ask for wisdom.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5 ESV)

Father, will you also provide another Christian who can walk alongside me and keep me accountable during this time? As they walk with me I pray that you will grant me endurance and encouragement.

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, (Romans 15:5 ESV)

God, you have called me to be a faithful steward and I have failed miserably in this area as I waste my time away.  Help me turn from this addiction and keep my eyes fully on you. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thoughts

It might be easy to downplay this idea and not call it an addiction. It would be easy to pray and then take no further action. But God calls us to not only believe in Him but live our lives as we do.

As you evaluate if this is a problem and what steps to take start by evaluating the situation. Has gaming increased over time? Has gaming taken the place of normal activities of an individual that age? Has gaming replaced the time the individual could be getting closer to God?

Confess honestly what this problem is, cry out to God for help, seek help within your church family, your friends, and seek therapy. Take action to live out the life God has called you to and while it might seem untrue, recovery is possible.

We have a greater joy than any video game can offer through Christ. He bids us to come and experience His goodness. So never feel like you are taking away something ‘fun’ but rather look at the greatness we receive in Christ!
