No one wakes up and says, “I’d like for things to go badly today.”  We all seek to have good days but we all want a better tomorrow.  We want our schedule to go as it’s planned to go, with a minimum of interruptions.  We’d like for situations we face to work themselves out, with as little drama and stress as possible.  We would prefer to have the opportunity to say, “That was a good day!”

We are reminded by the Apostle Paul to

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5.18, NIV).

A Brief Prayer for Things to Go Well Today

Dear God, I need for things to go well for me today.  I’ve had so many bad days in a row, I’m losing my focus and hope.  Please let this day be a good one.  Let positive things happen throughout this day.  I am asking for your divine touch at all points in my day–some sort of sign that you hear me and see me.  I ask this in the name of Jesus, my Hope, Amen.

Prayer for Things to Go Well in the Morning

Dear Lord, I have an important discussion I have to have in the morning.  I’m not looking forward to it, but it has to happen.  The situation with this person has gone too far.  I admit I should have handled this earlier than now, but here we are.

I pray for the person to listen to what I have to say, and for me to hear what they say when they respond.  I need for this situation to be resolved and to be resolved in a positive manner.  I’m asking for everything to go well in the morning, Lord.  Help me to get good sleep tonight so I am in a good frame of mind for tomorrow morning.

I pray for all of these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Things to Go Well at Lunch

God above, can I ask for a simple request for later today?  I have a meeting at lunch that really needs to go well.  I am talking to my supervisor about a job change and I’d like for her to hear me out when I talk.

We picked a luncheon meeting so we could talk off-site, which I hope will allow us to have a candid and open conversation.  I have planned out my morning so that I won’t be rushed and I’ll have a proper mindset for this lunch discussion.

I pray for my supervisor to not get defensive.  I pray for me to be calm and speak with clarity and focus.  I ask for these requests in prayer to you, O God, my Savior, Amen.

Prayer for Things to Go Well in the Afternoon

God, I need your help throughout the afternoon.  I don’t know if it’s my circadian rhythm or what, but I’ve noticed that I tend to not be in a good mood in the afternoons.  I pray for you to enable me to have things go well after lunch until I leave each day to go home.

I don’t want to be negative; I want to be positive.  I’d like for people to be glad to see me in the afternoon, not dreading the encounter.  I ask for your direction to discover why I seem to tank emotionally in the afternoon.  I start the day fine, but after lunch, it’s like a switch gets flipped.

I pray for things to go well, and for me to do whatever is needed to make that a reality.  In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Things to Go Well at Night

God in heaven, I pray to you for assistance and support and comfort.  At night, I am finding that everything from the day piles up in my thoughts and I begin to worry and fret.  I ask you to make things go well tonight.  At least for one night let me approach the darkness with hope.

I pray for safety for me and my household.  I pray for protection for my property and for those around me.  I pray for nighttime to be a time of calmness and peace around me, and within me.  I am talking to you, O Lord, in prayer, because I don’t want to upset my spouse with these feelings.

I want to place my trust in you and see your mighty hand at work in my life.  I pray to you and ask you for the night hours here to go better than they have been for me lately.  I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Things to Go Well While I Sleep

God, your Word says that when I go to sleep, I can ask for my sleep to be restful and surrounded by peace.  That is what I ask for.  While I am sleeping, will you be at work in my circumstances?  Will you, O Lord, remove obstacles I face each day, and restore my confidence in your healing power?

I pray for things to go well as I sleep.  I need you to grant me full rest and refreshing, renewing sleep.  I pray for things to go well with those in my family as well.  I pray for things to go well with each person I encounter tomorrow, knowing that you have already gone ahead of me to prepare the way.

I ask for these things from my heart, and in the strong name of Jesus my Savior, Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

It’s a fairly natural desire to want for our circumstances to be better today than they were yesterday.  Generally, we seek to have positive change in our lives on an ongoing basis, as opposed to just one time.  Part of what helps us want for things to go well is an understanding that whatever we face, God is in the midst of it.

For things to go well doesn’t necessarily mean that we will be rich or what have you, but it does mean that God will provide for us, care for us, and guide us through each situation.  We can claim the promise of contentment like the Apostle Paul,

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want” (Philippians 4.11-12, NIV).

Sometimes our situation improving over what just happened could be a small step forward.  For things to go well in a day may mean that something happens that no one else will notice, but we will, and we’ll know that it was God at work in our lives.

Isn’t it a great comfort and strength to know that we can pray to God about anything in our lives, including our desire for our situation to improve?  Doesn’t it fill your heart with a special joy to realize that your prayer for things to go well in your day is just an honest admission that you need God in all his fullness?  How wonderful it is to be able to claim the truth from scripture each time we pray:

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46.1, NIV).

The words ever-present are another way of saying all the time.  Every hour of every day, God is present with you.  Present with you in your trouble.  Involved with you and your circumstances so that you are not alone as you seek to have aspects of your day improve.
