Distracted driving is easy to come by these days. Many of us have too much on our plates and find our minds wandering as we go from one place to the next. We try our best to be focused on the road and keep watch for other dangers as we drive.
However, accidents happen. Not everything can be prevented. Four years ago my husband, 4-month-old son, and I were driving home from a wedding and a deer came out of nowhere on the highway and hit us. Our car was totaled, but the Lord protected us on the road that night and we had no injuries.
We were very grateful we had a high-quality car that had proper safety features to keep us protected as well. We shouldn’t make cars idols, but God cares how we spend our money. In the Scriptures, it says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21, NIV).
We shouldn’t be envious of those with fancy cars, but it’s a wise use of your money to invest in a vehicle that is going to protect you and those that you love. Once you have your vehicle you want to make sure it stays protected. It’s actually a common practice for people to bless their cars!
Break ins, hit and runs, and other types of car accidents happen all the time. Today’s the day to start praying for car protection! We can’t only rely on ourselves for safe keeping. We can use the words of Samuel to begin, “my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.
He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—from violent people you save me” (2 Samuel 22:3, NIV).

Short Prayer for Car Protection
Lord God, bless this vehicle. Car accidents happen all the time and I pray you keep me safe from harm. Help me to be attentive to everything around me so that I may arrive safely and keep my vehicle safe. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection While Driving
Dear God, please protect my car as I am driving. I will try to be attentive as I am driving, but please be my protection. Wrap your arms around my vehicle. May they be a shield for me today.
I have a lot going on lately so I know I can be easily distracted when driving. Help me to remember that safe driving is important. Thank you for allowing me this time to commune with you. I get nervous while driving as car repairs can be very expensive well. You have given me great resources and insurance so I know you will provide, but I still don’t want to be in that situation.
I know I cannot control the other drivers so I just pray that if someone else is driving unsafely that you put me out of their path. May my car escape unscathed or minimally damaged. I trust in you to be my rock and my shield. In Your name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection while Son/Daughter is Driving
Good and gracious God, please bless and protect my (name of child) as they drive. I have been in accidents and many almost accidents and I fear that will happen to my child. I love (name) so much that I cannot imagine living a life without (him/her).
Cell phones scare me the most these days with teens. I understand how addictive they can be. The fear of missing out and the pressures of teenage life are much different than that of when I was (his/her) age. Please remind (his/her) safety is more important than any text, call, or social media post.
Please protect (his/her) car. If (name) is to get in an accident may it have minimal damage. May the air bags work properly in the event of an accident and first responders be at the scene quickly. Lord, I hope that situation never occurs, but if it does please be a force of peace for (name.) In Your name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection for a New Car
Lord of Lords, You are so good for providing me with the resources to get a new car. I worked hard to get the money to get this car, but please help me to use it to travel places to glorify you. It’s exciting to get a new car, but help me to stay grounded in you and not get caught up in materialism.
This car is, in fact, just a car, but I ask for Your might hands to shield it while I am driving and while it is parked. May it not incur any crime or accidents. May all the words spoken in this car be made holy and be glorifying to you. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection When on Vacation
Praise God, we are on vacation! We had a successful flight to our destination so our car is at the airport. Please protect our car while we are gone. Keep it safe from theft, scrapes, and dings. I want to enjoy our vacation, but still feel a little bit anxious about leaving our car at the airport even though millions of people do it!
I give you thanks for safe travels and ask for peace as I try not to worry about our car. I’m not in a mood to arrive home to a burglarized car or fender bender. Ultimately, I know cars are just possessions and as long as my family and I are safe I will be at peace. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection in Bad Weather
Dear God, the weather is terrible. It’s (snowy/rainy) and I am fearful for my life or the life of others. Thank you for this car with plenty of features to keep me safe. Please keep all the features working properly! Please keep the tires from skidding or blowing out. Help the windshield wipers to keep working and the headlights to stay on.
In the event of an accident please help the airbags to deploy properly and keep all passengers safe. It feels silly to ask that the car won’t get too damaged either, but I know you listen to all of our prayers. You are my strength O, God, and I trust in you to guide me as I struggle to see and make it to my destination quickly and safely. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection in a Rental
Dear God, please protect this rental car. I am on vacation and we needed to get a rental to travel to our destinations. It is stressful driving someone else’s car in a town that you don’t know very well. I don’t know all the features of this car or the feel of it so please give me peace as I adjust to learning how to drive it.
I do not want to have to pay for repairs for a rental car so please protect this car from door dings, scrapes, and accidents! Please bless those who work at the rental company and bring them joy this day. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Car Protection in a Parking Lot
Please watch over my car as I go inside (place). Parking lots can be very dangerous. I locked the doors to prevent a break in, but locks can still be picked. I also really don’t want my car to get a ding or side swiped.
It seems silly to pray not to get a door ding, but I know you hear all prayers. You gave me the resources to be able to buy this vehicle and I want it to stay nice. Please help people to stay alert as they are backing out. Parking spots are tight and it’s easy for damage to be done to cars. Even shopping carts can cause damage if they get loose!
Please bless my car and keep my car and everything inside it safe as I run my errands! In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Concluding Thoughts
Whether you’re going to work, to get groceries, or going on a trip, car travel is almost always necessary! We are lucky to live in a world where getting places can take minutes instead of hours or days!
However, driving, like anything comes with a risk. It can be dangerous and outside of your control. The best thing to do is ask God for protection over you and your car while you are driving and while you are away from it. The Lord is the ultimate protector. He is “my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him” (Psalm 28:7, NIV).
