Dating seems to change with each generation, especially in the way we define it and talk about it. “Hanging Out” “Talking” “Situationship” “Dating” “Courting” and maybe some other terms this unhip mom doesn’t know about.
“Dating” in the Bible was also very different. Parents would arrange relationships not for love but for family advancements or even survival. Prices were paid, usually with an animal and what marriage looked like was very different than what we see today.
Times change but God doesn’t. He still values marriage and thus He values the process in which we get to marriage. He still wants to be involved in our lives, especially in the relationships that we will have throughout our lives.
Dating is an important part of finding a spouse. No matter what you call it or how you define the relationship you are in there is a need to seek God during this time. There are so many decisions to make and a great need for wisdom during this process.
We all have our own dating stories, and I could share countless ones with you. Stories of mistakes, sins, and young selfish practices. I have stories of grand romantic gestures and tears shed. You probably have some similar stories to share.
Sharing our stories with those who are dating can be helpful as we share what God taught us and the lessons we learned through it. However, the greatest thing we can do for those in our lives who are dating is to pray for them.
We are so glad that you have decided to pray to God during this season of dating.
The aim of these prayers is to direct you back to God and worship Him during this season.
Short Prayer For A Dating Couple
Dear Heavenly Father, I pray for dear friends of mine who are dating. I pray that they seek You throughout this process. Allow them to hear Your voice as You guide them.
Lord, I pray that this couple is aligned with you and the calling on their lives so that they can work together for your glory. Give them the words to communicate with love and patience with one another.
God, I ask that you open their eyes if they are not to pursue this relationship further. Give them peace that you are in control if this relationship needs to end. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For My Dating Relationship
God, I pray that you will guide me in my dating relationship. Help me to seek after you throughout this process. Please open my eyes to where you are guiding me.
God, if I am to continue dating I ask that you will guide me to continue to get to know my boyfriend/girlfriend better. But if we are not to continue to date will you give us both peace?
God, help me to see if this relationship is one that is equally yoked. I do not want to be in a relationship with someone who does not truly know and loves you.
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV)
God, I ask that throughout this process of dating you guard both of our hearts, help us to communicate in a way that honors you, and allow us to never sin in this relationship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For Dating Couple To Get Married
Dear Father, I thank you for marriage. It is a beautiful plan you have allowed us to be part of.
Today I am asking for your guidance for a couple that desires to be married. I pray that you will guide them to know your will in their life.
Father, as they take the next steps towards marriage I pray that you would open communication between them so that they can continue to get to know each other better.
God, this time before marriage is very tempting to pursue each other in ways that are still only reserved for marriage. I pray that you protect them from sinning during this time.
Father, I pray that you will help this dating couple to begin to see what it looks like to be a good husband and a good wife. Allow them to see the standards you have given us in scripture. Help them to see if the person they are dating is someone they can obey your word with.
Finally, I pray that you give them wisdom if marriage is the best next step. Allow them to make a decision that is honoring to you. Give them accountability with others in their church that can speak truth into their lives and allow them to seek you in your word. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For Dating Couples To Guard Their Hearts
Father, I pray that you help this dating couple guard their hearts. It is easy to get too involved too quickly in regard to the heart. Allow this couple to enter into this relationship slowly and cautiously. Guide them on how to do this.
God, in these dating relationships we are often exposed to our own prideful hearts. As this dating couple battles through some self-growth will you help them to guard their hearts from self-deprecation but instead remember that they are forgiven in You?
Father, help this dating guard their hearts not only for their own good but also for the good of their future marriage and spouse. You have made marriage such a beautiful thing and by guarding their hearts in dating they can experience all the blessings of marriage.
In Ephesians you share with us how marriage reflects Christ’s relationship to the church. So I pray that you help this young couple not only for themselves but also for your glory from the on-looking world.
Father, for all these reasons I pray that you guard this young couple’s heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For Dating Couples To Guard Physical Boundaries
God, I ask that you help this dating couple respect the physical boundaries that you have reserved for marriage. It is so easy to go too far physically when you think you really love someone. Give them a true conviction of what your word says and the desire to live by it.
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. (Hebrews 13:4 ESV)
God, I ask that you will help this couple set up boundaries and safeguards before they put themselves in a situation where they would be tempted. Give them other Christians that can help keep them accountable. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For Wisdom For Dating Couples
Dear Heavenly Father, you alone know all things. I ask that you give this dating couple wisdom.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5 ESV)
God, give them the wisdom to know if this individual is the right person for them to be dating. Help them to see clearly, without emotions, how this person lives and if this person loves you.
God, I ask that you give this dating couple wisdom in the area of how to treat one another. You do not call dating couples to completely treat each other like they are married. However, they should in many respects treat each other with love and kindness like married couples do. Give them wisdom in how to treat each other.
Father, please give this dating couple how their relationship fits into your plan for their lives. Give them wisdom in what you are doing and how you are using this dating experience to draw them closer to you.
Father, give them wisdom in ways that I don’t even know they need. I pray this in your name, Amen.
Closing Thoughts
Dating can be a very exciting time in young people’s lives. It’s a step in the direction of adulthood, independence, and marriage. God has given many people the desire to get married and we should feel blessed that He has allowed us to be part of this plan.
However, dating can be very tricky as well. It can bring unexpected emotions, hard conversations, and heartache. Dating can also allow us to enter into temptation that we wouldn’t otherwise be tempted by in a single life.
It is important to pray about all these things as you enter into a dating relationship or if you know someone who is dating.
