5 Prayers for Husbands Addicted to Substances

Marriage is a beautiful promise full of love and hope for the future, but it can also come with struggles that cannot be foreseen. Temptations surround us in our everyday life, and it does not take much for those temptations to become addictions.

In 1 Corinthians 10:13-14 the Bible teaches us that “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

I have faith that everything put on our paths was specifically made to teach us something. The hardest parts of my life came before I was saved, and I hope that your husband is on that same path towards salvation and deeper love with God.

I pray that you have a community to help you through this time. Know that many of these communities are online via Zoom or other video chat tools and while you might be hesitant to try something online these can still be very effective.

I also want you to know that you are not alone, God is with you and working to fight the evil that is consuming your spouse. I also want you to know that there are support groups for those whose families are living with a person struggling with addiction. They have resources that may help you through this very difficult time and set you up for better months ahead.

Closing Thoughts

The emotional ache that addiction causes a person and their family is heartbreaking. When you have a husband facing addition it can impact all areas of life: from finding stable work to maintaining the marriage and everything in between.

The only things you can do is to try and be supportive of recovery and to rely heavily on God.

James 4:7 teaches us to “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” It is hard for people consumed by addiction to see that resisting temptation, getting clean, and getting right with our Lord is the only way to find peace.
