The purpose of dating is marriage, right? It can be difficult to watch your son dating for a lack of purpose. Whether he is in an intentional and committed relationship or a new fling, it’s always a good idea to pray for your son and his girlfriend.
Whether your son is 15 or 35 it’s normal for you to worry about the person they are dating. The divorce rate is 50% and you want them to be a marriage that is long-lasting and glorifying to God. Three things that you can do for your son while they are dating to help prepare them to be a good boyfriend and husband:
Teach the Faith: “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” ( 2 Timothy 3:14-15, NIV).
Teaching your child about Jesus will make them desire to have a girlfriend who values and desires to please God as well. It’s never too early to start talking about God to your son to plant the seeds of faith!
Be an Example: “Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). Your children imitate you! How you treat your spouse is their first example of what a healthy, Godly, romantic relationship should be like.
Pray: It’s never too early or too late to start praying for your son’s girlfriend. Pray for him, her, and their relationship to keep it centered on Christ! Lord, our son and his girlfriend have been dating for a while now. I believe they are thinking about marriage. We would love for (name) to be a part of our family. We truly do love her as our own. Prayer for Son and His Girlfriend to Have a Christ Centered Relationship
Lord, one of our biggest desires for our son and his girlfriend is that they will have a Christ centered relationship. There are so many distractions and temptations in this day and age. I hope they can resist the physical and emotional temptations of a relationship that should only be found in marriage.
If they are focused on you then these temptations will be easier to resist. Help them to see the importance of putting you at the center of their relationship. May they be praying together regularly and using this time to grow as disciples individually and together. Someone once told me to pray with a passage from 1 Corinthians and replace the word love and it with your name. Today I pray this for (girlfriend’s name).
[Love] is patient, [love] is kind. [Love] does not envy, [it] does not boast, [it] is not proud. [Love] does not dishonor others, [it] is not self-seeking, [it] is not easily angered, [it] keeps no record of wrongs. [Love] does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [Love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:4-7, NIV).

Prayer for Son’s Girlfriend to be a Woman of Noble Character
Glory to God in the highest! One thing we ask of our son’s girlfriend is that is a woman of noble character. Proverbs 31:10-31 is a passage about a what it means to be a woman of noble character.
“She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31: 26, NIV). May (name’s) girlfriend strive to be attentive to the movements of Your voice. I hope she uses this skill to make prudent and wise decisions. May she be a woman whose words are kind loving and not idle with gossips.
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks” (Proverbs 31: 17). I hope (name’s) future wife is determined and hardworking. May she succeed in whatever tasks she is working towards no matter if they are big or small.
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30, NIV). I pray (name’s) girlfriend is a God fearing woman in all the best ways. I know she will glow with beauty if she is in awe of You and desires to please you.
I pray for (name’s) parents that they are instilling in her the importance of this characteristic and that her mother is a good example of being a woman of worth. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Son’s Girlfriend to Put God First
Dear God, Your Son says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12: 30-31, NIV).
If these are your greatest commandments then they are my biggest prayers for our son’s girlfriend. I hope his girlfriend loves you above all else. Someone who puts You first is someone who will treat (name) the way he deserves to be treated.
If she is struggling to put you first right now I pray that you take away the distractions. Give her the desire to be a holy woman who prays daily and fervently.
I also pray she loves others as herself. Your Son served the poor selflessly and that is something we should be doing here on earth. It is our mission as Christians to be Your face, hands, and feet to those we encounter daily. We hope this mission is at the forefront of her mind.
If she is struggling in either of these areas please place someone in her path to help her grow. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Prayer for Son’s Girlfriend to Be a Virtuous Woman
God, there are many virtues you want us to model as Christians. The Scriptures tell us that compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience are just a few of the characteristics we should embody as Christians (Colossians 3:12, NIV).
I fervently pray that (name’s) girlfriend is compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, and patient. When she sees those less fortunate than her may she remember to treat them with the love of Christ. May all the words that come from her lips be spoken with kindness, gentleness and love.
May she be a woman who does not boast about her accomplishments. May she be someone who recognizes Your power and knows that she can do nothing without You. May she have a heart of humility. If she struggles in this area please give her the desire to change and/or put someone in her life to help her improve in this area.
Help her to grow in the virtues of fortitude and faith. If she doubts you at all Lord, please show her that you are a miracle worker. Help her to persevere in any trials she may be facing. In whatever area of her life he may be lacking please show up for her and help her to be a more virtuous woman so that she can better love and lead our son to You. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Concluding Thoughts
Dating can be an exciting time in a man’s life just as it can for a woman. It’s full of discovery and love. However, it can also be exhausting and heartbreaking. It can be beautiful to watch your son fall in love, but also gut wrenching when he goes through a break up.
No matter what happens in each romantic relationship your son pursues you should continue to pray for your son, his girlfriend, and their relationship. May they glorify God in all aspects of their relationship!
