Do you know of someone in a coma and want to pray for them?
Let one of these eleven caring prayers be of comfort to you as you pray for the one you love. You can change the wording of any prayer to better suit your specific circumstances. May the depth of care for the person in a coma be expressed as you pray to God on their behalf.
People can fall into a coma for any number of reasons, including stroke, head injury, brain infection, or seizures. They won’t normally respond to sound or pain, and simple reflexes are greatly reduced. These conditions can make it challenging to be with the person and care for them. But you can pray for them, regardless.
Although most comas don’t last for more than several weeks, it’s hard to predict when a person will come out of one. Praying regularly for the person in a coma can be a way to handle the waiting and wondering.
Their situation is serious and you may also want to pray for wisdom and guidance from God, as James encourages us:
” Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind” (James 1.4-6, NIV).
Even though they can do nothing for themselves while they are in a coma, you can trust in the reality that God is caring for them in their condition. The Psalmist reminds us that God is their Sustainer and Healer:
“The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness” (Psalm 41.3, NIV).
Pray for your friend or family member and grow in your relationship with God as you do. Know that you are playing a key role as you intercede for their restoration and healing.
Prayer For a Boyfriend in a Coma
Dear God, I pray for my boyfriend who is in a coma right now. He was in a bad car accident yesterday and I am so frightened. What if he doesn’t wake up? What if his brain is permanently damaged?
I have so many questions and no answers, so I turn to you for peace and comfort. Help (boyfriend’s name) and heal him. Protect his brain while he is in this coma and bring him back to me. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer For a Girlfriend in a Coma
Dear Lord, I want to pray for my girlfriend because she is in a coma that was induced by the doctors. She hit her head real bad when she slipped and fell on the concrete. The doctors said the coma was necessary to help relieve the swelling in her brain.
I pray for her complete recovery and full brain function. Please heal her, Lord, in the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Prayer For a Wife in a Coma
Oh God, I am freaking out because my wife had to be taken to the hospital. She apparently had a stroke and she is in a coma! I don’t know what I will do if she doesn’t make it, God. I cry out to you in prayer to heal her.
Help her brain heal. Help her come out of the coma with no deficits in function. The EMTs told me that she had a good chance of recovery because of the quick response, but there are no guarantees. I’m grateful for their care and attention to her.
I pray for her to wake up Lord. I want to have my wife back. I place my trust in you and your healing hand. In the name of the Great Healer, Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.
Prayer For a Husband in a Coma
God, my husband’s diabetes spiraled out of control and he’s in a diabetic coma as I pray to you, here in the emergency room waiting area. He had been doing such a good job monitoring his condition so I’m a bit overwhelmed as to how all of this happened.
Thank you for the medical care he is receiving. Thank you for working your healing power through medicine and the doctors. I pray that my husband will come out of his coma in due time and that he will be fine. Give me strength Lord as I wait. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Prayer For a Son in a Coma
Dear God in heaven, I lift my son up to you in prayer. He’s in a coma and the doctors are not sure he’ll come out of it. He was helping a friend with a house project and fell off the roof. The doctors said he likely has a traumatic brain injury.
I am practically numb and frozen because I am so crushed by this news. Have I lost my son, Lord? Will I never get to talk to him again? Please bring about his healing over time. I turn to you because I don’t know of anything else I can do. In the strong name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Prayer For a Daughter in a Coma
Dear Jesus, my daughter was robbed on the street and in the attack she suffered serious head injuries. Now she’s in a coma and the doctors said it could be a couple of weeks before she may come out of it. Is she going to remember anything? Remember us, her family?
There’s going to be a blank spot in her life if she comes out of the coma. Two weeks or more that she won’t get back. Please heal her as she lays in that bed, hooked up to all the machines and monitors. Bring our baby girl back to us, Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Prayer For a Friend in a Coma
Dear Lord, I heard that a friend of mine is now in a coma. He was in some kind of accident and it was real bad. I don’t know all the details, but I want to lift him into your hands and ask for his full and complete healing. I pray your mercy upon him and his family.
Surround them all with your Spirit and bring them comfort. I ask all of this through Jesus Christ, Amen.
Prayer For an Aunt in a Coma
My aunt’s health has not been good for some time, Lord, and now she’s in a coma. I pray for my aunt to be okay. I don’t know whether to pray for her healing or pray that this be a merciful transition to going home to you.
So, I bring her to you in prayer. May your will be done. I love my aunt and want what’s best for her, but I don’t have any idea what that is in this situation. May your wisdom be made known. I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Prayer For an Uncle in a Coma
Dear God, my heart is heavy as my uncle’s health and bad habits have caught up to him. He is now in a coma at the hospital and they said his alcohol intake and diabetes were contributing factors. May this be a wake-up call for him.
I love (uncle’s name) so I pray to you on his behalf. Bring about his healing as his body rests in this coma. I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Prayer For a Grandmother in a Coma
I don’t know how this happened to her, O God, by my grandmother somehow has a brain tumor and it has put her in a coma, due to the pressure on that area of her brain.
I come to you, interceding for her healing and full recovery. I don’t know how long she’ll be in a coma, Lord, but I don’t want her to die because of this. Please help my grandmother, Lord Jesus, Amen!
Prayer For a Grandfather in a Coma
Dear Lord Jesus, my grandfather slipped and fell on the front steps of his house and bopped his noggin pretty good. His fall frightened my grandma and now we heard he is in a medically-induced coma to help his brain heal.
I guess that’s good news all things considered. I pray for his healing and that his brain will function like normal once he recovers. I pray to you on his behalf, through Jesus Christ, our Healer, Amen.
Final Thoughts
Knowing that someone close to you is in a coma can feel overwhelming. You can’t ask them how they are feeling, or if you can do anything for them. You may feel powerless or helpless.
But keep in mind that Lord God Almighty is an ever-present help to you in times of trouble and strife and stress and worry. Let the words of the prophet Isaiah bring you peace and comfort:
“So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41.10, NIV).
Praying to God for your friend or family member who is in a coma can be an exercise of peace and trust. As you pray you are both interceding for the person, and reminding yourself that while you may feel powerless, you are praying to the One who is Power, Love, Truth, and Mercy.
