6 Healing Prayers for a Headache to Go Away

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

I get a raging headache when I don’t have a cup of coffee. If there was ever a question about whether I’m addicted to coffee, the answer is a loud YES. Not everyone gets caffeine withdrawal headaches, but if you find yourself with a headache for any reason you can always pray for your headache to go away!

As I was complaining about my headache I couldn’t stop thinking about how Jesus was forced to wear a crown of thorns.

“Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.  They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,  and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head.

They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again” (Matthew 27:27-30, NIV).

As I reflected on this passage I was reminded that my pain was very minimal compared to His, but also that He suffered too. Jesus isn’t just some figment of my imagination, but a real person who knows, from personal experience, what it’s like to suffer physically and emotionally.

I have given you 6 prayers for a headache to go away, but feel free to customize them to your specific situation! Please leave any prayer requests in the comments so we can pray with you!

Short Prayer for a Headache to Go Away

Good and gracious God, I have a raging headache that won’t go away. Please take this pain away from me. It seems silly to complain about a headache, but I know you are always listening to my cries.

I long for the pain to go away, but in the meantime, help me to focus on accomplishing the tasks I need to get done. Give me the strength I need to get through this day. In Your Name I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Migraine Relief

Lord of Lords, please take my migraine away. My head is throbbing. It feels so deep in my head and has lasted for days. I can barely do basic tasks. I’m stuck in bed due to terrible nausea and occasional vomiting. I hate feeling this way. I am just so tired. Please let it stop soon.

I’m so sensitive to light and sound right now I can’t even have the lights on or watch television. This is just such a sad and lonely existence. I feel like I’m getting swallowed into a dark hole. The pain is so intense I just want to cry.

I’m falling behind on all of my tasks. I can’t even take a shower without getting dizzy. I can’t keep missing work so please let today be the last day of this terrible migraine.

I get these often enough that I know my triggers for migraines are lack of sleep and not eating and drinking enough. I know I did this to myself so I have no room to complain. Help me to bear this cross and offer my sufferings up to you.

Your Son was whipped, beaten, and had to carry His own cross to His crucifixion. Still, in His last moments of life, He said, “I thirst” (John 19:28, NIV). In His deep suffering He thirsted for You alone. Help me, in my time of suffering, to thirst for You. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Sinus Headache

God, I have a terrible sinus headache. I think it’s due to an allergic reaction or a cold turned sinus infection. The front of my head is pounding. Everything just feels so tight, congested, and painful. Please help this pain to go away.

Instead of focusing on the pain in my head, help me to focus on you. May you have the eyes to see how much you love me.  May I have the ears to hear the voice of the Lord calling to me in the midst of this busy life. He is there to carry me through my sufferings. Help me to use this pain to glorify You in some way.

It seems silly to complain about a headache when Your Son suffered so much on Earth. He was flogged and unjustly sentenced to death on a cross.

“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they shouted. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified” (Mark 15:12-15, NIV).

Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice so I can live. During this short time of suffering help me to remember the pain you went through. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Tension Headache

Lord, I have an awful tension headache. My head is aching all over my head.  Please take the pain away. Heal me of my afflictions. The tenderness around my neck and shoulders is contributing to the discomfort of this headache.  I’m not doing a great job of managing my anxiety so I believe it is stress related.

Help me to unite my sufferings to the pain of Jesus. I imagine the thoughts running through Jesus’ head during his passion and death were similar to those we have frequently: “Father this pain is too great. Please take it away, but most of all I trust in you.” “Father, I am so tired. Help me continue on this journey to fulfill your will.” “Father, I feel like can’t do it, but I know with your help I can. Help me to glorify you through this pain.”

Help me to cope with my anxiety so that I can avoid these tension headaches. I feel like I’m doing something wrong. I hear things like, just pray and you’ll be fine, but that doesn’t always help. I know the importance of Jesus, of entrusting my sufferings to Him, but that I need to couple this with tangible tasks to help me heal.

I know Jesus understands my mental suffering. He wasn’t depressed, but he had to battle negative thoughts and temptations just as we all do. I know You are with me and all will be well even if it doesn’t seem like it now. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Chronic Headaches

Lord, I am struggling with chronic headaches. Most days every month are filled with intense pain. It’s difficult to function. I’m finding it hard to keep up with my family and work because of the frequency of the headaches.

I think a pain management plan is necessary. I am meeting with a doctor soon to figure out the reason for the recurring headaches. Please give me relief. It really just feels like it’s never going to stop.

Help me to remember that my suffering is small compared to that of Your Son.  The greatest act of love is Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Even when I am suffering from these headaches help me to make great acts of love for others. I know You are pleased by even my smallest act of love.

I want to offer the sufferings of my headaches up to You because, like Jesus, I thirst. Jesus thirsted to be with His Father in Heaven and You thirst to be with me. I get so distracted in this world. Often times I forget that it is Jesus I need and Jesus that I need to be seeking. He is the only one who can quench my thirst. In Your name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Caffeine Headache

Dear God, I am embarrassed to say that I have a caffeine headache. I have been short with everyone today because of my withdrawal. It seems rather unhealthy that one morning of no coffee and I’m this grumpy and in pain.

Lord, please make this headache be short. Please relieve the pain and make it go away. I love my coffee, but help me to remember that Jesus is first. In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus. Help me to not be so reliant on caffeine and more reliant on You.

I love you Lord and trust that Your grace and strength will be more than enough to get me through this day. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

Whether you are struggling with a caffeine headache, sinus headache, or migraines, your life can be drastically interrupted. It can be difficult to exercise, work, or even accomplish basic tasks. Whenever you are struggling with headaches I hope you can take comfort in Jesus.

Jesus was fully man and knows the physical pain you are going through. He had a crown of thorns thrust onto His head so He is very familiar with head pain! Take a brief pause to think about what it was like for Jesus to suffer.

Thank Him for His willingness to suffer for you. If the pain feels like too much, ask Jesus to carry You like He did His cross. He will always pick you up with His loving arms.
