6 Direct Prayers for Dad Having Surgery

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Looking for prayers to pray about your dad’s surgery?

My dad was facing surgery a few years ago and I was concerned.  He was older and sometimes surgery in older adults doesn’t go as smoothly as in younger people- especially if it’s a senative area like the knee or eyes.  I lived a time zone away so I couldn’t be there with him and felt powerless to do much.  So, I prayed for him.

Praying for my dad’s surgery gave me peace, which I think was really more the point.  He came through surgery okay and all was well, so I was thankful afterwards.

I was also very thankful that I had a way to deal with my concern for my dad–I could pray!  Prayer helped me put the situation in proper perspective by placing his care in God’s hands.

Depending on your relationship with your father, you may have long thought he was invincible.  But then something happens and he needs surgery–a reality check that can be jarring.  What do you do?  You can visit and be with him before and after surgery, of course.  But, if your circumstances don’t allow for that, then the best thing you can do is pray for your dad.

As you pray for your father’s surgery, you can claim the truth of this scripture for your dad and his body and health:

“Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure” (Psalm 16.9, NIV).

These six direct prayers seek to cover common surgeries or concerns and are intended for you to use in faith.  As every surgical situation is unique, you are welcome to alter any of the prayers as needed to fit what your dad is facing.  Pray your prayer in the confidence that God hears you through Jesus Christ.

As you pray, you may feel the need to express your own prayer requests.  Please do so in the comments section below, at the end of the article.

A Short Prayer for Your Dad’s Surgery

Lord Jesus, I pray for my dad while he is in surgery right now.  The doctor said it would be a fairly straightforward surgery and for that I am glad!  Nonetheless, I pray for the surgery to go smoothly and for all infection to be kept out of my dad’s body.  I am so thankful that you are still a healing God, even through surgery, you receive the glory!  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Your Dad’s Outpatient Surgery

I’ve dropped my dad off for his outpatient surgery, Lord, and now I’m just waiting for him to be finished.  The surgeon told me it wouldn’t take long, but was very necessary for my father’s health.

I pray for this surgery to relieve the pain in my dad’s body.  Nothing else has worked and the pain has been adversely affecting his life and his ability to function and work.  I’m glad that I was able to be here for him–Thank you Lord!

I’m also grateful I’ll be able to stick around for a few days to get dad started on his rehabilitation routine which is apparently key to his recovery and continued health.  Give me patience with my stubborn father, who will not want to do everything he’s supposed to do.

Thank you Father God for the peace you are giving me now as I pray.  I lift my dad to you in prayer, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Your Dad’s Surgery With Hospital Stay

Lord Jesus, my dad’s going to have surgery later this week and it’s serious enough that he will have to stay overnight.  I know this is going to frustrate him because he doesn’t really like hospitals and the reality that he will have to stay in one weighs on him.

I give you thanks that this surgery will get my dad the healing his body needs, but I do pray for his time there.  I pray that he remain calm until he can be discharged.  I pray that he grasp the importance of following the surgeon’s instructions for recovery.  I pray his body gets rest that night he is there.

I pray for the surgery itself as well, Lord.  It’s supposed to take a couple of hours so I pray for the doctors and nurses to be alert throughout the procedure.  I pray in your name against any complications and any infections.

Thank you Lord for the hospital being close to where Dad lives so that Mom can scoot back home if she needs to without too much trouble.  I pray for this whole medical situation in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Prayer for Your Dad’s Heart Surgery

Lord God, my dad is having heart surgery in about an hour.  He said it’s just a “procedure,” but I know it’s more than that.  He’s had heart trouble and now they need to do surgery to repair his heart.  While I’m thankful for medical technology that makes this not as invasive, it’s still heart surgery, Lord.

I pray for my dad to be at peace during the surgery.  I pray for any blood loss to be replaced fully so his body can be at full strength afterwards.  I ask that this surgery for his heart fix the problem so his heart can be healed.

I pray for his recovery to go well and that my dad will do what the doctor orders so the healing can take hold. I lift all of these concerns to you, the Mighty Healer, Lord Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Your Dad’s Joint Replacement Surgery

God in heaven, I’m having a hard time with the news that my dad will have to have joint replacement surgery soon.  There’s something about him having to have a new joint installed that is alarming to me.

It’s kind of a wake up moment for me, Lord.  If my dad’s body is wearing down or tearing down, it mean’s he’s getting older and in my mind that means he closer to dying than not.  I’m praying to you right now, God, because I need your help to make sense of this and grant me a calm heart and a restful mind.

More than that, Lord, I pray for my dad.  I can tell he’s nervous about this surgery too.  I pray you grant him perspective and peace.  I pray for his surgery and that every detail that needs to happen, happens according to plan.

I pray against any infection, which I’ve read can be more common in these types of surgery.  I pray for this physical therapy that will begin soon after surgery.  I ask for full healing, which I know may occur over time.  I pray that my dad will be able to move around and walk like normal post-surgery.

Thank you Lord for hearing my prayer, as I pray in the strong name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer for Father-in-Law’s Surgery

Dear Lord, my father-in-law is having surgery tomorrow and I want to lift him to you in prayer.  I have a terrific dad already, for whom I am very grateful.  But I am so blessed to have a second dad because I married my wife.

I pray for (father-in-law’s name), that he get strengthening rest tonight so his body is in peak shape for the surgery in the morning.  I pray for his travel to the hospital and all the pre-operation details to be done efficiently.

I pray for his surgeon to have clarity and focus as he operates on (name).  I lift up the nurses and anesthesiologist as well, that they do their jobs well.  I pray for the recovery time in the hospital, that you protect my father-in-law from any infections or complications.  I pray all of this in the healing name of Jesus, Amen.

Final Thoughts

When your father is facing surgery it can be a reality check for him, and for you. Of course, that’s true of any parent or guardian. As you talk with your dad about the surgery he is facing, be attentive to what words he uses as he talks about it, or his concerns regarding the surgery- even if it’s a more routine procedure.  As you listen, you may get a sense of what to pray for him, as well as encouragement to give him prior to the surgery.

Knowing you are there for him can be encouraging as well.  Trust that the words that come to mind, in conversation with your dad, and in prayer to God, will be healing words.

“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Proverbs 16.24, NIV).

When you pray you are entering into a conversation with God.  And you are also calling upon the power that created the universe by merely speaking words.  You are calling upon the authority that parted the sea and raised the dead.   When you pray, you are asking and trusting the God who has done all that for the healing for your dad.

“Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard” (Isaiah 58.8, NIV).

Let these prayers be a useful tool to you in your time of need around your dad’s surgery.  Let the act of praying allow your spirit to be strengthened, your relationship with God to be deepened, and your dad to be comforted.
