7 Honest Prayers For Financial Anxiety

Last Updated on November 29, 2023 by Emma

Each time I go to the grocery store, a restaurant, or a clothing store I find myself balking at the price of each item. Inflation is through the roof right now which is causing financial anxiety for a lot of people. We are in tough times so it’s important to pray for those dealing with financial anxiety.

I quit my full-time, job 2 years ago to stay home with our, now, three children. My husband is a pe/health teacher and part-time university instructor. We have had to make incredible financial sacrifices for this lifestyle to work for us. We live very simply and, like many of you, still feel anxious about our finances.

Something I have really struggled with is consumerism. It’s easy to feel like we need the next new thing all the time, but when money is tight there’s no wiggle room. There’s no money for extra things and I find myself sad or resentful for the lifestyle we’ve chosen at times.

However, I have been challenged by these words in Scripture, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21, NIV).

If I am putting my money and time towards material things I am going to live a very unhappy life. Being prudent with our money, making sure we are still generous with our money, and making sure we are using it in ways that are glorifying to God.

I have given you 8 prayers for financial anxiety. I have used the pronoun I in most prayers, but feel free to customize them to we, he, she, or them depending on who you are praying for!

Please leave prayer requests in the comments so we can pray with you!

Short Prayer for Financial Anxiety

Lord, I am struggling with financial anxiety. I’m having a hard time functioning because I don’t know how I am going to make ends meet. I always feel like I’m playing catch up. I’m exhausted and overwhelmed. Help me to surrender my worries to You. I know You will provide. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for a Married Couple’s Financial Anxiety

Lord, my (husband/wife) and I are struggling financially. It’s been a huge strain on our marriage and I’m getting worried. We made vows to each other, but I am worried this financial stress could be too much. Do not let it get the best of us. I will fight for my marriage, but I need Your grace and strength to do it.

We have made financial decisions, some good and some bad, some alone and some together that have put us in this situation. Something that I know will help our financial anxiety is if we make decisions as a team. We need to be on the same page, but that’s hard for us. Help us to find unity.

Help us to glorify you in all our financial decisions. If we make purchases with you in mind I think we will feel more financial freedom. Help us to be good stewards of the money we do have. Help us to only worry about what we need to and not let our anxiety boil over. I trust in You and Your plan for us. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for a College Student’s Financial Anxiety

Lord, my financial situation is causing me extreme anxiety. I am trying to keep up with my studies and working as hard as I can, but I can barely pay for my expenses. I’m trying to be frugal and prudent, but I can’t help but worry about paying my rent.

It’s hard to continuously say no to friends who are always going out to eat, to parties, or to fun events when I don’t have extra money to spend. I don’t want them to know I’m struggling so sometimes I spend unnecessary money because I don’t want my friends to feel bad for me.

Give me the strength to be honest with my friends when I need to so that I can avoid some of this financial anxiety. If I cut out those extra dinners with them I know I’ll have more financial freedom.

I am also worried about my student loans even though I won’t have to deal with them until after I graduate. Help me to stay in the present moment and not snowball out of control. You will help me deal with that when the time comes. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Wisdom in Times of Financial Anxiety

Lord, I am really struggling financially. So much so that I have had extreme anxiety over it. I need help dealing with it. I think I need to see a counselor and a financial advisor, but my anxiety is so great that even thinking about making those appointments is difficult.

Please give me the wisdom to know how to handle this anxiety. Please give me wisdom on how to get out of my financial distress. I know it will be easier if I can put my trust in You.

I know that sometimes I want things, but they aren’t what You want. Help me to align my plan with Yours. Don’t let my ego or selfish desires get in the way of Your plan for me. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Peace in Times of Financial Anxiety

Holy God, I praise thy Name. I am in a really tough spot financially and the anxiety has been all-consuming. Please give me Your peace. There is no use in worrying. I will try my hardest to listen to the words of Scripture: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7, NIV).

The book of First Peter also says, “They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it” (1 Peter 3:11, NIV). By applying for this new job I truly am trying to seek peace and pursue it fiercely. However, I know that no matter what job I have my heart will be restless unless I rest in You.

Help me to put You first and have peace with my financial situation. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Generosity in Times of Financial Anxiety

Lord, I am in a time of financial anxiety. Things are quite difficult right now. Inflation is insane and my salary just isn’t cutting it. It’s in times like this that I don’t want to tithe or give to charitable organizations. I want to be selfish and keep every penny for myself so that I can treat myself to something.

Forgive my sinfulness, O Lord. You have always been generous to me. You have never failed me. You always give even when I take. Our church community has given me so much so I must remember to give back to them even if I feel like I can’t.

Press into my heart and mind these words from Scripture, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38, NIV).

You bless those who are generous so please help me to have a heart filled with generosity like yours. Although I may need to cut back my donation amount help me to find ways to give of my time instead. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Self-Control in Times of Financial Anxiety

Lord, I am not in a good place financially. It’s hard to make ends meet and I worry about how we will pay for everything each month. However, even though I know this it’s hard not to spend money on things we don’t really need. That’s silly, isn’t it?

I’m struggling with the pressures of keeping up with society. Sometimes I feel like I need certain things to fit in. I need self-control so that way I only purchase things that are necessary.

Social media and ads make me believe that I need things or just make me want things. I need to be more prudent in the media content I am consuming to help me with this self-control.

Lord, your Son made so many sacrifices for me. Help me to know that these small sacrifices of clothing, desserts, and trips are ways to unite myself to Your Son. I feel really silly for struggling with idolizing items and things of this world.

Honestly, I’m ashamed, but I know Your mercies are new every morning and You will always forgive my transgressions. Thank you, Lord, for always being faithful to me even when I am weak.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV).

In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
