6 Bold Prayers For Financial Discipline

Last Updated on November 16, 2023 by Emma

It is good to be disciplined in many areas of our lives including our finances. The Bible is clear that we should strive to be disciplined. In Titus, Paul writes about the qualifications of those who oversee God’s church.

For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. (Titus 1:7-8 ESV)

Paul included many qualities of an overseer and ended with the quality of being disciplined. Being disciplined involves making and following through on decisions that would be honoring to God.

This is not something we can do on our own. We will fail as we try and grow in being disciplined. But God is gracious to continue to help us through this process.

What a gift it is to have a God walking alongside us as we grow. This is why it is important to pray when we want to be more disciplined.

Money is an area we need to be disciplined in.  How we make money, use money, and give money reflects how we are disciplined and reflects our heart.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21 ESV)

As you work as a Christian to be financially disciplined there are issues that you can pray about as you seek to honor God.

We are glad that you desire to be financially disciplined and eager to pray to our God who can help. Please comment below if we can be praying with you during this time as you seek to be financially disciplined.

Short Prayer For Financial Discipline

God, I ask that you help me be financially disciplined. I want to honor you in all that I do including how I make, spend, and give my money.

Father, I ask that you help me to make a good plan to be financially disciplined and then help me to execute the plan in a way that honors you.

Give me the wisdom I need to know the best way to be disciplined in this area. When I feel tempted to spend the money on selfish things help me to instead trust in you and your guidance in my life.

Father, help me to communicate well with others in regard to my finances in a way that honors you. Do not let me become prideful or boastful but have a humble heart.

I know that everything that I have comes from you so help me to be honoring in how I use it. For your glory, Amen.

Prayer For Financial Discipline While Working With Others

God, you are in control of all of my money. Money affects so many different parts of my life. It even affects how I relate to others. As I am trying to be financially disciplined I’m asking for your help in how to work with others.

God, please help me to make smart decisions on who to work with and be in business with when it comes to my finances. I don’t want to be unequally yoked (2 Corinthians 6:14) with someone who doesn’t trust you as Lord.

God, as I try and handle money and be disciplined help me to trust others. Allow me to be honest and respectful towards my employer and those I owe. Help me not to prioritize money over these relationships.

Father, for those that I have borrowed money against or have joined with on a venture, help me to be honest with these individuals with my financial goals. Help me to pay back what I owe and help our relationship grow during this time.

I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer For Financial Responsibility

God, as I prepare to start being financially disciplined I pray that you help me see what I value and make sure that the decisions are based on what you value. I pray you give me wisdom in this area.

God, I want to value You and Your kingdom above all.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33 ESV)

God, I ask that even though I’m working on being financially disciplined in my own finances it will not affect my desire to have a generous spirit.  I know that there are many in need. Help me to see the needs and be willing to help.

You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. (2 Corinthians 9:11 ESV)

Give me wisdom on how to steward my resources wisely. I want to be able to make clear decisions on how to use my money.

God, when my desires for financial discipline clash with what you have called me to do will you please help me to seek you and not my own feelings?

Give me wisdom on how to carefully plan financially. Amen.

Prayers To Save While Being Financially Disciplined

God, help me to trim unnecessary expenses so that I can save. Give me discipline to do this.

God, I pray that saving does not just allow me to be comfortable but to prepare for the future. I am so thankful that you promise to provide. I love to rest in this truth. Help me to not forget this truth and think I can depend on my own abilities but also not be unwise about thinking about the future.

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. (Matthew 6:31-32 ESV)

Allow this time of saving to help me learn how to discipline my budget. I ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayers To Be Financially Disciplined With My Spouse

God, I want to be financially disciplined and I want to work with my spouse in a way that honors you. Help me not to leave my spouse in the dark and to honor his/her opinions as we try to be financially disciplined together.

Father, help us communicate. Allow us to think clearly, plan well, and work together about our financial future.  Give us strength to establish habits now.

When we are tempted to get frustrated about how finances are being spent. When I start thinking too highly of myself and resent my spouse’s spending. When things don’t get executed as I want. When unexpected expenses come along. Help. Help me not to sin against my spouse.

God, help me to manage my relationship with my spouse. I do not want my goals of financial discipline to affect how I interact with love towards my spouse. Help me to be a good wife  (or husband) and respect my spouse throughout this process of being more financially disciplined.

God, I pray that this process of being financially disciplined will help us grow together and honor you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer To Be Disciplined To Give

God, even when I do not have an abundance of money I pray that my heart will still desire to give. Help me to be like the churches in  Macedonia and give sacrificially. They were poor, and they still gave.

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. (2 Corinthians 8:1-2 ESV)

Lord, help me to live in a generous way because of your love that leads me. Help me to have a Gospel mindset and always give generously to others.

It’s because of you that I have received grace and I want to return this to those in need. Help me to extend grace not just in words but also through my finances. Give me the discipline to plan and give generously.

Lord, I thank you for the church and that they have helped me grow spiritually. They have helped me to see the importance of being financially disciplined and I want to give to them generously.

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. (Galatians 6:6 ESV)

Help me to see that giving is not just something I’m called to do but that it reflects the joy of my heart. God, you have given me so much and I want to give back even and especially when I’m trying to be financially disciplined. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
