4 Prayers For Protection From Floods

Last Updated on October 18, 2023 by Emma

Is a flood coming your way?  Do you want to pray for protection from possible flooding?

Hearing about a flood means it is imminent.  You may have some advance notice and have time to make evacuation plans.  Flowing water will go where it may and there is little to hold it back.  Levees can be breached, dams can burst, rivers may overflow their banks, and storms bring more rain than drainage systems can contain.

In the midst of a stressful, chaotic time, you may not know what to pray, other than “Help us, God!”  I encourage you to remember (or read it fully) the story of Noah and the flood.  God promised never to destroy the earth by flood again.

He marked his promise with a rainbow (which you have seen, so you know the promise still holds).  Here is a reminder that the water stopped rising and the rains stopped for Noah, and so they will for you as well:

But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible” (Genesis 8.1-5, NIV).

Just as Noah began to see land again, so shall you see the flooding reside. Or perhaps the hurricane changes direction, or the torrential downpour of rain is not as much as predicted.  Whatever your situation is right now, you can pray one of these four prayers for protection from flooding.

Praying centers your heart and mind upon God and not on the storm or the water.  You are literally putting the Word of God into practice by casting your burdens, and worry upon the Almighty.  Praying about possible flooding relinquishes your anxiety and fills you with peace.  Place your faith upon the foundation of Jesus Christ.

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7.24-25, NIV).

Let your prayers rise to God who can sustain you through all that may come in the next few hours or days.  Through it all, God is with you.  Pray in that hope, and pray in that promise.

Prayer For Protection From Flooding Due to Hurricane

Lord, I just saw on the weather news that a big hurricane is headed our way.  They’ve upgraded it from a category two to a category three, and maybe up to four, by the time it hits us.  I’ve prayed to you before God because this is not the first time we’ve had a hurricane come this direction.

The authorities are calling for evacuation so we’re doing all we can to board up the house and sandbag around the property, especially down by the water.  I thank you Lord, that our house sits up on a small hill so maybe that will help protect our property from flooding.

I pray to you and ask you to keep the flood waters from our home.  I ask that you move that hurricane and its destructive winds and rain away from us.  Turn that hurricane back out to sea, Lord, that it will dissipate away from us and everyone else in our community.

This seems like such a selfish prayer, Lord, but I don’t want our home to be ruined because of all the possible flooding that could happen.  I pray that you protect our house, in the strong name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Protection From Flooding Due to River Rising

God, are you willing to protect our home from flooding?  I’ve always heard that phrase, “Lord willing and the creek don’t rise,” and now I thought of it again and, well, God, the river Is rising.  That much water all at once will flood this area.

I pray the authorities will release more water downstream so we don’t get overwhelmed and literally wash away because of all that water overflowing the banks.  I knew when we moved here by the river it was always a possibility that the river could rise up over the banks and flooding happen.  I just don’t want it to happen now.  Or really, I don’t want it to ever happen.

I don’t want this great property, which is a place of peace for us, to be destroyed.  I don’t want our home, which is filled with so many wonderful memories, to be ruined because of water damage brought on by flooding.  When I think of what could be tossed into a dumpster, forever ruined by a flood, I’m brought to tears.

God, please protect our home and property from flooding.  I cannot do anything to restrain a river, but I can pray to the God who created heaven and earth.  I can pray to the God who separated the water from the dry land.  I’m praying now, Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer For Protection From Flooding Due to Rainstorm

God of all creation, this rain is not stopping!  It just keeps raining and raining and I’m seeing bigger and bigger puddles out in the corner of the yard now.  The land can’t absorb or soak up any more water.

I’m afraid we’re going to have flooding if this rainstorm continues for too much longer.  God, I don’t want our precious home ruined by flood waters.  We just bought this house a couple of years ago.  I know it’s just a possession, Lord, but I feel like you allowed us to get this home as a blessing–a place to raise our family.

Help us Lord and protect our home from the potential flooding.  Cause the rain to cease.  Let the sun return. Let us see the rainbow and remember your promise.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Protection From Flooding Due to Dam Bursting

God, I do not know what to do!  I just received an emergency alert by phone and text–the dam up river has burst and a ton of water is headed our way quickly.  I can hear the alarms sounding now, too.

God help us!  We don’t have any time to prepare or board up the house, or build a sandbag barrier or anything.  We’re grabbing what we can and stuffing the cars and heading out of here as fast as we can.  We are at your mercy Lord Jesus.

I don’t want to lose our home and everything in it.  I know insurance will do what it can do, but when I think of rebuilding and the time and money involved. . .I’m getting physically sick to my stomach right now.  Lord, protect our home and our lives.  Divert that water down other tributaries and creeks, or down into unpopulated fields and hollows.  I ask for your sovereign grace upon us and our home.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Final Thoughts

You may not think you have time to pray if flooding seems to be coming soon, but praying for protection from the flooding is some of the best time you can spend.  Praying and speaking scripture brings the power of God into your circumstances.  Let the words of the Psalmist calm your heart:

For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
    that lifted high the waves.
26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
    in their peril their courage melted away.
27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards;
    they were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he brought them out of their distress.
29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
    the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
    and he guided them to their desired haven” (Psalm 107.25-30, NIV).

God will calm the storm in due time.  He will guide you to a safe haven.  Damage can be restored or replaced.  God is walking with you as you pray, so rest in that truth.  May the promise of the prophet Isaiah bring you strength and comfort right now:

“When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
    they will not sweep over you” (Isaiah 43.2, NIV).

May these prayers allow the peace of God to surround you and guide you.  Keep safe and keep praying!
