7 Hopeful Prayers for Reconciliation with an Ex

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

God created us to be in a relationship with one another but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In the book of Genesis, it says, “The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18, NIV). However, we are sinful people so relationships don’t always work out the way we hope them to so sometimes we need to pray fervently for reconciliation with ex.

Quite often relationships end with a lot of mixed emotions and hard feelings. Infidelity occurs, harsh words are exchanged, and/or resentment between parties occurs. However, when there is a division between people we are divided from God as well.

Scripture tells us to “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32). The Lord always forgives us. No matter how hard it may be, as Christians, we are called to forgive and work toward reconciliation with others.

I’ll share 7 prayers for praying for reconciliation with an ex to get you started and feel free to customize them to fit your specific situation.

A Short Prayer for Reconciliation with an Ex

Lord, my heart hurts. I had a great relationship with (name), but somehow things went wrong. I hope we can get back together. Help us to reconcile our differences and to remember the love we shared for one another. Give us the grace to heal what was broken. In Your name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer for Reconciliation with an Ex-Husband

Good and gracious God. I come to you as a broken sinful woman. My husband and I are no longer together. We drifted apart due to our own selfish desires. Lord, I want to reconcile things with my ex.

We made vows at our wedding to love each and honor each other all the days of our lives. Give us the desire to grow back together as a couple. I know we can do nothing without you. I trust in you and hope that ultimately thy will be done.

I pray that (name) is seeking you in all of this. I don’t know where he is or what he has been doing since we split, but I hope through it all He has been seeking counsel with you. Protect Him and lead him back to me.

Prayer for Reconciliation with an Ex-Wife

Lord, you brought my wife and I together many years ago. I’m grateful for the time we were able to spend together. I want to mend things with my wife. Although we are no longer together, I hope that we can put our differences aside. Help us to rekindle the love we once had for each other.

You alone O Lord can mend our hearts. I trust in Your power and providence. I know you can move mountains so please help us to heal the wounds we have inflicted on each other. Hurtful words were exchanged. It’s hard to move past this, but I know you call us to forgive just as you always forgive me.

I pray (name) is pursuing you through this. May she find counsel and comfort in Your loving arms. (Name) is a woman of worth. She is clothed with strength and dignity. Although I fell short, help her to know she is loved by you.

I harbor harsh feelings. Help me to remember that she is a child of God. Help me to remember that she was made in your image and likeness too. Help me to see her the way You do Lord. Jesus, I trust in you. In Your name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer for Reconciliation with an Ex-Boyfriend

God, I am distraught that (name) and I broke up. I thought You wanted us to spend our lives together. I felt that was the path You were calling us to, but I guess You have different plans for us. Help me to trust that You have better plans for me even if I can’t see it right now.

I am going to work harder to make You the center of my life. I think (name) and I both have things to work on. Maybe, once time has passed, You will lead us back to one another. Your timing alone is perfect.

May we use this time apart to follow You and Your plan for us as individuals. May (name) desire to love and honor you in all of his thoughts, words, and actions.

If (name) is not whom You desire me to spend my life with then lead me to that man. I hope he is pursuing you. I hope he will lead me closer to You and Your sacred heart. I trust in You.

In Your Name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer for Reconciliation with an Ex-Girlfriend

Good and gracious God. Everything that you give me is a gift. (Name) and I broke up. I thank you for the time we spent together. I learned a lot about You and who I am, but that doesn’t make this any easier.

It was difficult to give my heart to her. I am overwhelmed with the thought of having to do it again with someone else. Maybe, once time has passed, You will lead us back to one another. If not, I hope we can at least reconcile our differences and be friends.

If (name) is not whom You desire me to spend my life with then lead me to that woman. I hope she is pursuing you. I hope she will lead me closer to You and Your sacred heart. I trust in You. In Your Name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer for Reconciliation for a Friend and Their Ex

Lord, I am so sad to hear of (name’s breakup/divorce). They are such good friends of mine that now I am in an uncomfortable position. I feel as if I must choose sides and I don’t know what to do. I need Your wisdom and counsel.

Give me the right words when they come to me to talk. May my words be Yours. Help them to see You and encounter You through me. I am trying to be a good friend by simply listening to them. I’m not sure what else to do right now.

They were such a happy couple and I am heartbroken that they are no longer together. There is a lot of turmoil surrounding the end of their relationship, but I just pray they can reconcile their differences. If it is your will then lead them back to each other.

Please give them the desire to chase after You. They might be wrongfully placing their resentment toward you. Sometimes people don’t understand why bad things happen to good people. May their relationship with you be strengthened and not harmed.

Sometimes when difficult things happen people find it difficult to pray. They turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms instead. I hope they have the desire to waste time with you O, Lord. In Your Name, we pray. Amen

A Child’s Prayer for Reconciliation Of Mom and Dad

God, I don’t know exactly what to say to You. My mom and dad have been fighting for a long time and have decided to get a divorce. I am stuck in the middle of this and feel as if I have become collateral damage. They are looking out for my best interest, but I don’t think they see how much this truly affects me.

I don’t want to be a child from a broken home, yet here I am. I want them to get back together. I want to be a family under one roof who loves and supports one another. I’m not sure this will ever happen, but I know you are a miracle worker and can do all things if it is your will.

Mostly Lord I just hope that they can reconcile their differences and have a civil relationship. Help them to forgive one another as you forgive them.

I hope they are spending time in prayer and trying to solve this in a Christian manner. In Your Name, we pray. Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

Relationships are difficult. It’s hard to open yourself up to someone only for things to go awry. The important thing to remember is to keep God at the center of your life and relationship. From there the Holy Spirit will guide you on the right path.

Although relationships don’t always work out with the fairy tale ending we see in books and movies, they should always end with a reconciliation of some kind. Whether that means getting back together with them or not, reconciliation will help you be more successful as you seek out your future wife or husband.

Whether that means pursuing a romantic relationship again or just mending indifferences, remember the words from Ephesians, you are called to forgive as Christ God forgives you.
