8 Powerful Prayers for Safety & Protection in Bad Weather

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Need to pray during bad weather?  Worried about your safety and protection in a storm?

When bad weather comes your way, it can be a time of worry and concern.  Will it reach our home? Do we need to evacuate? Should we stay and ride it out?  Are we going to be safe? And is our home going to be safe?  These and other questions naturally come to our minds when faced with a storm. Even more so if you have loved ones traveling during dangerous weather.

It’s also natural to pray for protection and these eight prayers are a reminder that God is aware of what we face.

When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43.2, NIV).

Accepting that we live in a broken world, which includes weather and nature, can help us understand that storms come and can cause damage.  Yet, we will pray to God nonetheless, as we also place our hope in him for safety and protection.  Whatever happens, we know that God is with us in every moment.

The eight powerful prayers here seek to cover the most common, or often occurring bad weather scenarios.  We invite to make and modifications in the wording you need to in order to fit your weather emergency.  The prayers here are a way simply to help you get started in crying out to God for protection.

It is in prayer, especially in the high stress moments of a storm or bad weather disaster coming our way, that we can remind ourselves, and our family, that we can have peace from God.  It’s the peace that rises above the situation we are in; the peace that is beyond our human understanding.

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26.3, NIV).

So, we hope you make use of these prayers if you need to do so.  But, we also hope you don’t have to pray these prayers very often.  Please share any other prayer requests with us at the end of the page.

Prayer for Protection During a Tornado

God, a tornado is coming our way and we’re not under a tornado watch, but a tornado warning.  One has been spotted close to us and we have to take shelter right now.  Please protect us and our home and our neighbors, Lord.

We have lived here long enough so this isn’t our first encounter with tornadoes but I still don’t like having to hunker down in a bathroom with no windows while it blows through our area.  I am grateful we have our emergency kit with flashlights and battery-operated phone chargers and an emergency radio.

Please help me to keep calm so my kids will see that and be calm as well.  This is serious Lord, but I don’t want to scare them any more than they already are.  I ask for this tornado to dissipate before it comes our way.  I pray for protection from this tornado, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Safety in a Snow Storm

Well dear Lord, the weather forecast was a bit off it seems.  We are now in the midst of a frighteningly large snow storm that has knocked out power across the city.  We have a fireplace that actually works, so we are so thankful to have heat right now.  Thank you Lord for that simple provision.

We have some food and water to last us for a few days and even a camp stove if we need to use it in the garage to cook.  I pray for our protection, Lord, that the snow does not cave in our roof.  I pray for the power company and road clearing crews who are out, that you keep them safe as well.

Help us all to understand this will take a few days to live through.  Give us your peace and strength as we adjust to pioneer-style living for the rest of this week.  I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Protection in a Hurricane

O God, not again!  We are just now getting back to some sense of normalcy after the last hurricane blew through here and caused so much damage.  And now, the weather report is telling us that a category three or four hurricane is headed our way in next day or two.

I guess I should be thankful that we still have all the plywood left over from last time so we can quickly board up our windows.  Thank you for the foresight you gave us to store that away.  Thank you also that we have some time to prepare.  We don’t have anywhere to go, Lord, so I ask that you protect us when the hurricane makes landfall.

Protect us and keep us safe and keep our area safe from the winds and flooding.  I pray this in the strong name of the One who has calmed the winds, Lord Jesus, Amen.

Prayers for Protection in a Wildfire

Father God, I pray for protection against this wildfire that is spreading so rapidly and appears to be coming in our direction.  The authorities have not called for evacuation yet, but we have our “go bags” ready if needed.  I’ve soaked our roof as best I can, as well as the perimeter of our yard.  I don’t know how much that will do, but I felt like I needed to do something.

Lord, I don’t want our home to burn down.  We have so many family memories wrapped up in the actual place we live.  I know we’ve got insurance but I ask that you sweep that wildfire elsewhere, where the wildfire crews can contain it.  I pray for them and their safety as they jump right into the thick of it to put it out.

I pray for all these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Safety During a Hail Storm

Lord, I’ve never seen hail like this before!  This is the worst storm I’ve experienced in my life and the hail just keeps pounding down.

Thank you that we have a garage for our cars and they won’t get damaged.  I pray for our house and the roof.  It sounds like a heavy metal drum concert right now and I’m afraid this much hail is going break holes in the roof, which leads to flooding, and then all the disaster dominoes start falling.  Please protect us, Lord.

I pray this prayer in desperation, Lord, and in the strong name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Protection From Flooding

God in heaven, I have so enjoyed living near the river, but now we face severe flooding from all the rain we’ve had in the last week.  I can see it rising in our backyard right now as I look out the window.

Lord, I’m glad our house is built on a bit of a rise, but that water keeps coming closer and closer.  We don’t have sandbags or anything else to hold it back, so I pray to you for protection in the face of this flooding that is creeping our way.

Help the outlet for all this water to open up downstream so the water has somewhere to go other than in our living room, Lord.  Keep us safe, I pray, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Safety in a Thunderstorm and Lightning

Lord, this thunderstorm is an extreme one, according to the meteorologist.  I know it’s loud and there is a lot of lightning with this one.  The strikes seem to be getting closer and closer and therefore louder and louder.

We have several big trees around our house that we’ve always loved. I pray those lovely trees don’t become instruments of damage to our house and a danger to our family because they get struck by lightning.  We’re on hill, Lord, and so we’re higher up–not a good situation in a lightning-filled storm.

Please protect our home and keep us safe in this thunderstorm.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Safety During an Earthquake

Lord Jesus, my building is shaking and stuff is falling off the shelves!  We’re having an earthquake and this is definitely not a tremor or low level one.  This one feels very high on the Richter scale, Lord, so I pray for your protection right now!

I pray for my neighbors and our whole apartment building.  It’s newer construction so I hope it holds sturdy for us in the next few minutes.  Please don’t let anyone be hurt from this earthquake, Lord, in the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Final Thoughts

Bad weather and storms are powerful forces and when they come into our life, we can feel powerless, weak, and helpless.  What can we do in the face of a massive storm?

We can pray!  We can pray to the One who created all things by merely speaking (or praying silently in our thoughts).  We can pray to the One who has promised to be with us until the end of time.  We can pray to the One who is the only God capable of calming our fears and providing the very safety we seek.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34.4, NIV).

When Jesus told his disciples (and therefore us) to not let their hearts be troubled, he was telling them that trouble was going to come to them, but it didn’t mean they have to be bound to the trouble.  This is why we pray, especially so when we are staring at a destructive weather force.

When we pray for safety and protection in bad weather, we are saying that we are placing ourselves in God’s hands.  His purpose and will for use will be worked out in every circumstance, including bad weather and horrendous storms.

Don’t let anything keep you from coming to God in prayer.  God is ever listening for you.
