7 Prayers To Be A Good Wife

Last Updated on February 7, 2024 by Emma

One of the most difficult parts of being a wife has been self-sacrifice. When we’re single we can make all of the decisions on our own. We don’t have to consider someone else when it comes to spending money, making plans, or living arrangements.

Occasionally I  think about how great it would be to do whatever I want whenever I want, but then I remember that I am a better, holier version of myself because of my husband.

Sometimes I don’t want to clean the house or make my husband lunch, but these are all things that make our life easier. Sometimes setting these negative feelings for the good of my husband helps make our bond stronger, just as he makes sacrifices for my own happiness.

If you struggle with this as well, try to remember the sacrifices Jesus made for us, specifically His passion and death.

“Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him” (Mark 15: 19-20, NIV).

Jesus did all of this out of love for us. In the times we don’t want to do things for our husbands, may we remember that we are doing it for the love of God and our husbands.

I’ve given you 7 prayers for becoming a better wife, but feel free to customize them to your specific situation and your relationship with your partner. Please leave prayer requests in the comments so we can pray with you!

Short Prayer To Be A Good Wife

Lord, I feel like I’m failing as a wife. I’m trying to show my husband gentleness, kindness, and unconditional love, but I keep falling short. Please help me to push aside my frustrations and talk to my husband like I am talking to You. This vocation is challenging and it can only be done through your strength. Please help me to be a better wife. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer To Be A More Sacrificial Wife

Lord, I have been selfish beyond belief. I continuously get annoyed with doing things that my husband asks of me that I don’t want to do. Help me to see these requests as a way of glorifying you. When there is something I don’t want to do, please give me a disposition of joy to do the task.

Making sacrifices will bring me closer to You. Remind me that this is an invitation to grow in holiness. It’s an honor to be a wife and I don’t want my selfishness to get in the way of my role as a wife. My husband deserves better. Please, Lord, help me to be a more sacrificial wife and to have joy in doing so. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer To Be A Wife Who Puts God First

Dear God, Your Son says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12: 30-31, NIV).

If these are your greatest commandments then they are my biggest prayers for becoming a better wife. I want to love you above all else. Someone who puts You first treats others the way they deserve to be treated.

I am struggling to put you first right now. I know in my mind that you are most important, but when I am plagued with responsibilities and the needs of my family all day I forget that it is You who gives me the life to do these things.

Please help me to see that You are most important. I pray that you take away the distractions. I am a tired and weary wife at times. The demands of my life sometimes get me down and I don’t have the energy to focus on You. Change my heart. Give me the desire to be a holy woman who prays daily and fervently.

Help me to love others like myself. Your Son served the poor selflessly and that is something we should be doing here on earth. It is our mission as Christians to be Your face, hands, and feet to those we encounter daily. Help this mission to be at the forefront of my mind.

I know I can’t walk the path to heaven alone. If it is your will please place someone in my path to help me grow in my relationship with you. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer To Be A More Positive Wife

Lord, I have found myself having a really negative attitude lately. I know if I keep this up my husband will fall into this habit as well. I believe he is tired of this behavior. I want him to have a wife who encourages him and lifts him up. I want him to see me as a source of joy and not grumpy and negative.

Help me to focus on the things that are going well throughout my day. Help me to see all the ways you are present in my life. When I want to be negative, change my negativity and turn it into a disposition of praise, peace, and joy. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer To Be A More Gentle Wife

Lord, I desire to be a more gentle wife. I have found myself getting angry, defensive, and using harsh tones unnecessarily. I want my husband to feel like he is coming to You when he relays the burdens, worries, and joys of his day to me. You always welcome us with open arms even when we sin over and over again. Help me to do the same for my husband.

The Scriptures say, “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near” (Philippians 4:5, NIV). Give me a gentle disposition. When I want to short with my husband, remind me how You respond to me. When I’m frustrated with his wrongdoings, turn my frustration into understanding.

I am my husband’s safe place. I never want that to change. Please help him to always feel comfortable coming to his gentle wife. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer To Be A Wife With More Noble Character

Glory to God in the highest! I want to be a woman, and more specifically a wife, of noble character. Proverbs 31:10-31 is a passage about what it means to be a woman of noble character.

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (Proverbs 31: 26, NIV). May I be a woman who is attentive to the movements of Your voice. May I use this skill to make prudent and wise decisions, especially when it comes to my marriage. May I be a woman whose words are kind loving.

She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks” (Proverbs 31: 17). Help me to be more determined and hardworking. Help me to succeed in whatever tasks I am working towards no matter if they are big or small.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30, NIV). Help me to be a good wife in all the best ways. I know I will glow with beauty if I am in awe of You and desire to please You. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer To Be A Less Anxious Wife

Lord, my anxiety is beginning to take over and it’s affecting my marriage. There are so many things to worry about when it comes to my marriage. There are so many stressors lately that I find myself withdrawing from my husband.

I find myself worrying so much that it’s inhibiting my ability to be a good wife. I’m so inside myself that I can’t appropriately care for my husband. He deserves the moon and the stars and my constant meltdowns puts so much extra stress on him. I’m truly not worthy of him at all.

Please help me to diminish my anxiety. You provide for all of my needs. Help me to stay in the present moment and not spiral. I need your peace. I trust you will provide. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

Marriage is not for the faint of heart. It’s a choice. You have to wake up and say yes to loving and supporting your husband each day as you both equally invest in your marriage. You have to commit to working towards becoming the wife that God desires you to be.
