Last Updated on November 28, 2023 by Emma

Are you searching for prayers to pray on a Sunday?  Do you need a specific kind of prayer for your Sunday?

Although you may pray on a daily, or regular basis, have you considered praying about a specific day of the week, or even for the weekend?

Take a look at these 12 simple prayers for Sunday as you think about the weekend.  Sunday usually involves going to church to worship and plenty of praying already.  So, why have more prayers for a Sunday?

Because there’s a lot going on for a Sunday in people’s lives, in your life.  While many people are off work on a Sunday, some people still work.  Others have various commitments on a Sunday or have to take care of anything that they couldn’t get to on Saturday.

Whatever your reason for coming to this page, we trust you will find a Sunday prayer that matches your scenario.  Since we don’t know all you face, you can change any of the prayers to suit your specific situation.  The purpose of these prayers is to help you pray about Sunday in a way you might not have considered.  They’re also to give you a prayer to pray if you’re uncertain how to pray.

Don’t worry if you have not prayed before, or you don’t pray regularly.  Prayer is merely talking to God, so talk to God like you were in a conversation.  You can speak what’s in your heart, what you want God to hear. But you don’t actually have to speak out loud and the conversation can stay in your head- God will still hear you. These prayers can be a starting point for you to do just that.

If you read the creation story,  each day God was at work creating.  On each day of the six Genesis days, God worked.  On the seventh day, God rested.  Many people consider that seventh day to be Sunday.

What that means for us is however we look at Sunday, it is another day we can focus our attention on God. Wouldn’t it make sense to pray about Sunday and all that God may wish to show us?  That’s why these prayers are here–for you to use as you seek out God.

We can, and should, worship God every day, but for most Christ-followers, Sunday traditionally has been set apart as a day of worship of God.  Sunday is a day that believers gather together to glorify God in singing, teaching, serving, and praying.  We agree with the Psalmist:

All the nations you have made
    will come and worship before you, Lord;
    they will bring glory to your name.
10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
    you alone are God.(Psalm 86.9-10, NIV).

As you pray about your particular Sunday situation, may God meet you in your prayers.  And my you open yourself to the God you pray to.

Short Prayer For Sunday

Dear Lord Jesus, I give you praise for this Sunday.  I love this special day to focus on you in meaningful ways, to rest from my work, and to spend time with friends and family.  May I receive all the blessings of this Sunday and embrace your love and grace.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

A Prayer For Sunday Worship

Lord, We pray for our Sunday worship.  We are going to worship you as individuals, but also together.  May you surround all that we do in worship today with your accountability and mercy, with your love and peace.

I pray for us to be open and willing to hear you and to change more into Christlikeness.  I pray we not make any excuses for not giving our whole selves to you.  I pray that we worship you in Spirit and in truth.  I pray that we hold nothing back in our praise, our worship, our learning and our praying.

I ask all of this through God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer For Teaching Sunday School

Dear God in heaven, I am teaching Sunday School this Sunday and I want to do a good job.  In our class we have several people that take turns and this Sunday I’m up.

I’m not too nervous about the actual teaching because we use a curriculum.  I am asking you to open my heart to your truth as I prepare so that I can be a vessel for you as I teach on Sunday.  I pray that everyone in the class hears what you want them to know so they can learn about you.

I pray that they take what they learn and allow your Spirit to transform them.  Help them apply what they learn so they follow you more closely as disciples of Jesus Christ.  I ask your blessing upon my preparation and upon the teaching and learning.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer For Attending a Bible Study

Dear God, I want to pray to you about a Bible study I’m going to this Sunday evening.  A friend of mine invited me to come and I’d like to get more connected with people at my church, so I’m going.

I’m a little nervous because I don’t know much about the Bible and I hope I don’t have to answer any questions. I don’t want to be put on the spot or look ignorant.  My friend told me it was a very welcoming group, so I hope that is correct.

Help me be at ease as I meet new people.  I also pray for you to open my mind and heart to your truth.  I want to learn more about you and how to hear your voice.  I pray that I can grow as I learn how to study the Bible.

I thank you for this opportunity, Lord.  I pray this in the power of the Great Teacher, Lord Jesus, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer For Serving at Church

Dear Jesus, I am excited about this upcoming Sunday!  I have wanted to be more involved with my church and now I have that opportunity.  The last several weeks, the church has been asking for volunteers to serve in many different areas.  So, I decided to respond and step out in faith that you were guiding me.

I found a ministry that appeals to me and I get to be a part of the team this Sunday morning.  I’m looking forward to meeting new people and being a part of something bigger than.  But mostly, I am anticipating being able to serve others with kindness.

I think it will be both rewarding and humbling.  Thank you for having the time and energy to do this.  Thank you for having a church that values serving others and offers chances to join in.  I pray that I may be a conduit for your grace and peace as I serve.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer For Singing at Church

Lord, I am singing with the praise team this Sunday and I am both anxious and excited about the chance to do this.  I’ve always enjoyed singing and especially praising your name in song.  And I’m grateful that you have given me a voice that is in tune.

I went to rehearsal and met everyone and it was such a warm and inviting group of people.  I felt at home as we began to sing and I knew that you had brought me to a place of ministry.  Thank you for this tangible confirmation of my earlier prayer to be in a place of ministry.

I pray for myself as I sing, and for all the other members of the praise team.  May we get ourselves out of the way so that everyone can focus on our Risen Savior and praise your name.  I pray for the Holy Spirit to inhabit our praise and fill all of our hearts.  I pray that you be glorified in all we do, and say, and pray, and sing.  Praise your name as I pray this prayer, Amen.

A Sunday Morning Prayer

Thank you Lord God for the quiet and stillness on this Sunday.  No one else is awake.  There is a comforting silence that fills the house right now.  I love this time each Sunday.  I look forward to these moments all week long.

As I make my prayer requests I know that you hear me.  What I most enjoy Lord, though, is that I hear you most clearly in the peace of a Sunday morning.  I know we should focus on you each day, but Sunday seems to be a special day to focus on you and your awesome glory.

I am humbled as I sit here and converse with the Almighty Creator of the universe.  That you would take notice of me and desire to hear what is on my heart is truly amazing and overwhelming, but in a good way.  Thank you for this time, Lord.  Thank you for receiving my prayer through Jesus, Amen.

A Sunday Midday Prayer

Lord God, we stop what we are doing and pray to you in the middle of this Sunday.  We have worshiped you this morning and heard your Word preached.  And now, we gather together to enjoy a wonderful meal together as the family of God.

May all we have received this morning be used within us to strengthen our faith and bring us closer to you.  May all we have learned be used to further your will and purpose in the lives of people around us.  Thank you for the gift of getting to follow you in faith.

We pause now to give you thanks for all you have done for us, and through us already this day.  May you bless the food before us.  May you bless the family and friends beside us.  May you bless the love between us all through Jesus Christ.  We lift this prayer to you in his name, Amen.

A Sunday Evening Prayer

Dear Jesus, you have brought us through this Sunday and now it is coming toward the close of the day.  What a wonderful blessing this Sunday has been.

In the morning we worshiped you with others in song and teaching and prayer. In the afternoon we enjoyed rest and renewal, and now, at evening time, we give you thanks for it all.

Continue to guide us through the rest of this night by your Spirit and surround us with your love.  In your name we pray, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer Before Going to Bed

Heavenly Father, as I get ready to go to sleep, I pray to you.  This Sunday has been a special one in the sense that is was so ordinary, yet so special.

It was ordinary in that we went about our usual Sunday routine.  Yet it was special because you guided us at each point in our day.  From the people we encountered to the truths that you revealed, we are blessed.  Thank you for walking with us throughout this day.

And now as I prepare to close my eyes and enter into deep and renewing sleep, I pray that you empty my heart and mind of negativity, so that even in my sleep, I am filled with your peace.  I sleep in your grace, that I may awaken to your love in the morning.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer To Prepare For Monday

Lord, I am praying to you on this Sunday as I look to tomorrow.  May all that you have poured into me fill me and strengthen me for whatever I face on Monday.

May the encouragement, spiritual nourishment, and physical rest of this Sunday be used tomorrow as I head to work and influence others by your grace.  Thank you for this day.  Thank you for the simplicity of what this Sunday has been.  It is a respite in my week and I am grateful.

I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

A Sunday Prayer For Your Family

Thank you Lord God for my family.  Sunday has been a day for family and I am so glad that we each respect you and each other and this day as a set-aside day.

It is so encouraging to hear from everyone as we share what all has happened throughout the week.  It is a heart tug as I watch all of us worship you as well.  Thank you for keeping us safe this week.  Thank you that we can be together on this Sunday, that none of us has to work on Sunday.

I pray for discernment for myself and each member of my family.  May we each listen for your voice and follow you in all we do.  May we truly love you with all of our heart, soul, strength, and mind.  I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

I want to be receptive to your Word and to allow it to transform my life. And help me to be a blessing to others in your name. I ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Consider This

You may not know how our modern calendar came into being, so here is a brief summary.  Ancient Babylonians  created our modern calendar based on the lunar cycle.

Then the ancient Romans named the days  after various gods and goddesses relating to certain planets. Anglo-Saxon cultures influenced how we know and call the days of the week now.  Back in the third century, the emperor Constantine, a convert to Christianity, instituted the current week,  with Sunday as the first day of the week.

So, when you pray about Sunday, you are inviting God into your day of rest perhaps, or your day of focused worship.

Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
    proclaim his salvation day after day.
24 Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
Tremble before him, all the earth!
    The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
    let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”  (1 Chronicles 16.23-31, NIV).

The ancient history found in Chronicles should resonate with us.  In that book that is filled with history and lists of genealogies, we find this declaration, this prayer of praise to God!  This should be a clue to us, that in the midst of all that is going on in our lives, we can pray and we can worship.  Prayer is actually a type of worship.

When you pray one of these prayers about a circumstance, you are acknowledging that God is God and you are not. This is the essence of worship.  Praying about that situation, or this circumstance that happens on a Sunday is a way to say, “God, I need you.  I can’t do this without you.”

We believe that you can pray to God about anything.  Explore the 100+ prayers that exist on this site (and more are added each week!).  These prayers for Sunday (along with Thursday, Wednesday, Friday, and every other day of the week) are written to help you connect with God.

May God bless you, and meet you, as you pray.
