8 Tender Prayers For Your Sister-In-Law

Last Updated on November 25, 2023 by Emma

Do you have a sister-in-law you want to pray for, but are not sure where to begin?

You have clicked through to this site and you are welcome here.  While you are here to discover how to pray for your sister-in-law, you can also find prayers for your brother, sister, or grandmother.

My sister-in-law is so much more, she’s a friend, a confidante, and an important member of the family. Having a good relationship with your sister-in-law is a blessing, and it’s important to let her know how much you appreciate her presence in your life, prayer is the most divine way you can do that.

Love for family extends to those who have become part of our family through marriage adoption or some other means.  The Apostle John reminds us, through the words of Jesus, that love is what matters in our relationships:

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.  This is my command: Love each other  ( John 15.12-17, NIV, emphasis added).

May these eight tender prayers for your sister-in-law help you in your relationship with her, and God.  You can modify any of these prayers to better suit your circumstances. We invite you to share your journey and prayer requests with us in the comments section below.

Short Prayer For My Sister-In-Law

Dear Lord, I pray to you about my sister-in-law and her life right now.  I love her like she is my own sister and I’ve never liked the in-law tag at all.  I lift her up to you, that you may guide her in the midst of all she is dealing with. It’s like it’s all come down on her at once.  I pray for her safety, her strength, and her peace of mind.  I pray that you will be made real to her in the coming days, Lord. In the name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.

Healing Prayer For My Sister-In-Law

Dear God, my sister is sick.  (Her name) is my brother’s wife, but I always call her my sister.  It seems like it’s possibly flu or pneumonia but either way she is not feeling well.

They have two small children and my brother is overwhelmed.  I pray for my sister to get the rest her body needs in order to recover and heal.  I pray that she will not try and do all the stuff that needs to be done, but to stop and receive the care she needs.

I pray that her immune system is strengthened with the medicines she is taking.  I pray that your healing hand is upon her even now.  I pray for her children to understand that their mommy is sick and can’t do some stuff right now.  I pray that they not get sick as well.

I pray all of this, trusting in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Sister-In-Law’s Home

Lord God, I come to you on behalf of my sister-in-law.  Her home was damaged by the recent storms that came through her area.  They are in a panic about all that was damaged and what they are going to do next.

I pray for calmness and peace to surround them, in their words and their thoughts.  I pray for the insurance adjuster to come out soon and help them through that process.  I pray that they can get the damaged part of the house covered with tarps or something, so no further damage happens.

I pray for their perspective, that they realize they are all safe and the entire house isn’t destroyed, only part of it.  I pray that overwhelming emotions running through them begin to ebb away in the coming hours and days.  I ask that you help them walk through this traumatic event by your mercy and grace.

It is in the name of Jesus I make this prayer, and in whom I place my trust, Amen.

Prayer For Sister-In-Law’s Grief

Father God, I pray for my sister-in-law.  Her dad just died yesterday and she is a mess.  She was so close to her dad and this is a devastating blow to her.  His death was unexpected, which only adds to the weight of what has happened.

I pray for you, Holy Spirit, to envelop her in your comforting presence.  She is overwrought with figuring out funeral details and burial plans and all of that.  She told me she barely remembers what day it is right now.

I ask that you give her rest, real rest; the kind of renewing sleep that she needs so she can function each day.  I pray the people who live close to her can be of aid to her as well.  Let her church lift her up and take some things off her hands.  Help her Lord, I pray.  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer For Sister-In-Law’s Work

Lord, I give you praise and thanks for the recent good news I heard from my brother’s wife.  She got a great promotion and a healthy raise at her work!

This is such great timing as they were looking at a tight financial bind, but now you have provided the way through for them!  She was so happy when I talked with her and it was good to hear the joy in her voice, instead of despair.

This will mean so much to them in the coming days and I am grateful that you gave them a tangible answer to prayer–something they could see and know that you are God for them.  Help them grow in their trust in you through all of this.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Sister-In-Law’s Children

Dear God in heaven, I am coming to you in prayer on behalf of my sister-in-law.  All three of her children are going to be out of the home in the next few months and I worry about her.  So, I bring that worry to you.

The oldest is already out and in her own home an hour away.  The youngest is soon to be married and will be living overseas.  The middle daughter is moving to the other side of the country for a job.  My sister-in-law is going to be seriously empty-nested in a very real way.

I pray for each of them in their life pursuits. I pray for them to get acclimated to their new places, new lives, new jobs, new partners.  They are all going to be out of momma’s immediate view and care.  I pray they make good decisions along the way.  Help them to find new connections and friends in their new places.

I ask this of you, and pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer For Sister-In-Law’s Car

God, can you fix my sister-in-law’s car?  I mean, can you help her find a good auto mechanic to fix her car?  She’s in a new city and doesn’t really know anyone, or know who to go to.

She needs her car for her work so this isn’t a small request, but something that is very important to her.  I could hear the anxiety in her voice when she called me.  Her husband is out of the country at the moment so he can’t really help her.

I pray for a co-worker or a new neighbor to be able to offer her some recommendations.  I pray for understanding from the people when she asks for their help.  Let there be empathy present in those conversations.

I pray that once this is all taken care of, she will give you thanks and praise for your love and care, and provision in her life.  I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer For Sister-In-Law’s Finances

Father God, my sister-in-law confided in me yesterday and she was so upset.  Their finances are a mess right now. My brother’s work has dropped some and he’s paid on commission.  Her job is fine, but there is no hope of a promotion or raise at her workplace because the company is “tightening up.”

They have some savings to carry them along for a short bit, but she was very worried about everything falling apart.  She was very much in a worst-case-scenario mindset and I pray that you can help get her out of that and into a more realistic frame of mind.

Help her see that you are providing for them right now.  Help her see that they actually have savings to turn to float them when so many don’t.  Help her to see that you are their provider and you have never let them down.  You have always come through and cared for them.

However that happens, Lord, I pray to you in faith and trust that you will help them.  Hear my prayer for them both, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Concluding Thoughts

Despite all the jokes about in-laws, we can know and trust that they are still a part of our family.  I personally have been blessed with wonderful people in my extended family and don’t regard them in the stereotypical “in-law” way–they are family.

Whatever your relationship with your sister-in-law, you are on this page and reading this article, which means you care for her and want the best for her.  As with Joshua’s following declaration, we can also serve God by praying for our family members.

“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD”  ( Joshua 24.15, NIV).

Serving God by praying for each other is one of the best ways to strengthen your family.  May your prayers grow you closer to God.  We invite you to share your prayer requests and celebrations in the comments section below.
