Being told that one needs to have surgery can come with a mixture of emotions. Relief that soon the daily discomfort will be gone and full shoulder use will return quickly mixes with apprehension about the surgery itself and the pain that it will entail. It can help to have a list of prayers ready to focus our minds on as we set out on this journey of surgery and healing.
When my young son was told he would have to have major surgery on his leg, my first concern was how to keep him comfortable and focused on anything other than his pain. Of course, we spoiled him with the usual treats and stuffed animals, but I knew that true peace would only come if he was reassured that God was with him.
This was when I decided to write bible verses on brightly colored sticky notes to post around his hospital room and his recovery area at home. We would start each morning by reading the day’s verse and deciding together where to post it so that he could see it either while laying in bed or working on therapy exercises.
One bible verse that became our favorite during that time is:
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
I hope that as you read through the list of prayers below, you can incorporate them into your own journey of having surgery on your shoulder and the healing that is to come. You could print them out and give them to your loved ones to read with you at the appropriate time, or perhaps you want to write them out on stationary now in order to focus your mind and then place them in various places around your home and things that you will be taking to the hospital with you.
Whatever you choose to do with them, I pray that God’s peace and comfort flow over you and fill you with courage as they did for us. Short Prayer For Shoulder Surgery
Dear Great Physician, Please be with me as I go through this shoulder surgery. Guide the doctors and nurses that will care for me. Ease my pain and soothe my anxious thoughts in the days to come. Thank you for the opportunity to have my shoulder fixed. Help my body to heal and regain full mobility so that I can serve you with my body, mind, and soul.
In your Holy name, I pray, Amen.
Prayer For During Shoulder Surgery
Dear Heavenly Father, I praise You for creating our bodies that can undergo surgery and come out renewed. Thank you for giving my medical team wisdom and talent for all they do. I marvel at the gift of a physical body that You have given me.
I know it is broken now, but I am confident in the rejuvenation it will soon go through. May Your healing power touch my shoulder and help it to heal fully so that I may serve you better in the days to come.
I ask for peace of mind as I go into the hospital to have this surgery on my shoulder. I trust in the process You are leading me through. Take away the worries that may fill my mind and replace them with Your reassuring words.
I pray for all who I will come into contact with on this journey. Put people on my path who will encourage and direct me in the ways to go. I know that You will bring me through this trial, and afterward, I will reflect on Your goodness.

Prayer For The Night Before Shoulder Surgery
Dear Merciful Father, I come to you tonight asking for a night of rest for my body and mind. I pray for sleep and peace so that my body can be strong and ready for the challenges ahead.
As the Psalmist said:
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” (Psalm 56:3)
I do not know what the days ahead of me will hold as I have surgery on my shoulder and return home to heal, but I do know that You have a plan for my life. I know that You will bring me through this time. May it be used to grow me as a person so that I can better serve You not only physically with my healed shoulder but also with the understanding I will gain as I go through the process.
For now, help me shut out distractions and close my eyes for a good night of sleep. Wake me up in the morning full of energy to go the hospital and receive the gift of surgery You are allowing on my shoulder.
In Your Mighty Name, I pray, Amen.
Prayer For Hospital Care Team
Dear Holy Healer, I ask You to shower Your blessings on my surgical team as they perform the operation on my shoulder. Give each of them the wisdom and steadiness of hands that they need to repair my Shoulder.
Please bless also the nurses and therapists who will take care of me in the time after the surgery. You gave each one of them their talents and the gift of healing. Help them to keep me comfortable and prepare me to go home.
At the end of each day, let all those working at the hospital return safely home for a night of rest. May they be filled with an appreciation towards You for the work they were able to accomplish.
In Your Compassionate name, I pray, Amen.
Prayer For Physical Comfort And Healing After Shoulder Surgery
Dear Lord, I ask that You place Your healing hands on my body and mind in the days to come as I recover from my shoulder surgery. Just as Your hands created my body in my mother’s womb, I know that You can soothe my pain and heal the muscles and bones touched by the surgeon. Help my shoulder to work like new again in the weeks to come.
God give me the patience to slow down and give my body time to heal. Focus my mind on the blessings around me rather than on the things I cannot physically do during this time. May I find comfort as I recall the words that the Psalmist wrote:
“The Lord sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness, you restore Him to full health.” (Psalm 41:3)
Father, I ask for guidance and energy as I do my daily exercises to regain the movement in my shoulder. Give my therapists wisdom as they create a regime for me to follow. I thank you for the miracle of healing that my body is going through. You truly are a good God, and I am amazed with your works!
In Your Precious name, I pray, Amen.
Conclusion
May these prayers and scripture verses remind you of God’s love for you and help you through the journey of having shoulder surgery. I will use the words of the apostle John today as we close:
“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.” (3 John 1:2)
