6 Grateful Prayers for a New Home

You’ve bought a new home and you’re thankful.  Why not lift a prayer of gratitude for what God has provided?

There can be so much stress surrounding finding, buying, closing and moving into a new home.  Lay your burdens down to God in prayer and let the peace of this scriptural truth surround you, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established” (Proverbs 24.3, NIV).

At each step of the home-buying process you may encounter worries or new obstacles.  I offer six grateful prayers, one for each step of the journey for you to use.  Let these prayers give you peace as you pray.  Let your words flow to God, who has promised to care for us in every circumstance.

We can pray to God anytime, anywhere, about anything so don’t feel timid or awkward about praying for a new home.  God hears all of what we pray.  Let these prayers bring you closer to God.

You are welcome to share your own personal prayer requests at the end of this article in the comments section.

Prayer for Finding a New Home

Lord, we’ve been looking for a house to buy for a couple of months now and it is getting frustrating.  It is so competitive.  We make offers and propose generous bids with our real estate agent and yet we keep getting turned down.

I wonder if we’re ever going to win a bid.  We really need to get into a house because our apartment rent is going up and up.  It doesn’t make sense to us, God, to keep paying that kind of money and not build up equity.

Please give us continued patience as we expand the area in which we are looking to buy.  Grant us favor with homeowners to accept our offers.  Guide us to where we need to be so we can make a house a home.

We want to develop relationships with neighbors and be a part of a neighborhood where our kids can play.  We’re asking for you to help us find a new home, Lord.  We ask this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer for Buying a New Home

Father God, we found a house that will work for us!  It’s in our price range and our agent said the owners are ready to sell.  We made a good offer so we’re just waiting for the bid paperwork to clear.

We’re so happy that this looks to be the one that will be our new home!  It’s hard to wait to hear that it’s a fully done deal, but we are so grateful that you guided us to this place.

We know no house is perfect but this one checked most of our boxes for what we were looking for–especially the sale price.  God, I ask that you enable this to go through so we can proceed to closing.

This process has been so stressful, Lord, so I give you thanks that we have crossed over from looking and bidding to actually buying.  My wife and I give you praise, the Great Provider, in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer for Closing on a New Home

Dear Lord, a new home is within our grasp this week.  The appraisals and inspections have been done and we are scheduled for closing and signing all the papers in a few days.

I pray for all the details to be worked out favorably for both us and for the seller.  I pray for the loan arrangements to finalize on time and there be no delays or obstacles to the closing this week.

I thank you, God, for our real estate agent who literally held our hand through this whole process.  (Name) has been so wonderful–I pray you bless her Lord for her hard work and dedication.

We’re going to have a home!  God, this has been a long-time desire for our family and now we’re this close to having it become a reality.  Praise you Father, for your provision, your guidance, and for strengthening us over the past three months.

I give you thanks and praise your Name, Lord Jesus, as I pray this prayer, Amen.

Prayer for Moving Into a New Home

Father in heaven, thank you for helping us to buy a new home.  A new journey for our family has begun and now we take the next step as we pack up all of our belongings and move.

I pray for the moving process itself.  I pray that no one gets injured as we move and lift heavy boxes and furniture. Lord, I know we’ll be sore, but I ask that you protect us from anything that would cause any of the people moving us to be out of work.

I pray for nothing to be broken or missing once we unpack.  I pray for us to leave where we are in good graces as we prepare to enter into a new reality–homeowners!

It’s hard to believe we have this much stuff to move.  Help us to sift and let go of possessions that aren’t needed any longer.  I ask for patience over the next few days as we unpack and figure out where stuff needs to go.  I don’t want to be living out of boxes for weeks and weeks.

As I pray this prayer, Lord, I am flowing with gratitude and peace that you have set forth our steps to arrive at this home.  Thank you God, and thank you for Jesus, through whom I pray right now, Amen.

Prayer of Blessing in a New Home

Lord, in the Bible it says that “with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed forever,”(2 Samuel 7.29, NIV), so I ask for your blessing upon our new home.

Bless the kitchen where meals will be made for family and friends. As we open the cabinets or the refrigerator, we will see daily how you provide for us.

Bless the dining room where we will share meals, laughter and tears, and support each other in our family by listening.  We’ll break bread with neighbors and friends in the bond of peace over food, Lord.  Let us see the beauty in each person around the table.

Bless the living room where we’ll gather, read, watch television, and simply be together.  May this room be a place of acceptance and grace.  Let all who rest here know they are family.

Bless the bedrooms where we will sleep O God.  Grant us renewing rest each night. Let these rooms be places of peace and refuge and renewal for each person who sleeps there.

Bless the yard where we will play and entertain and enjoy your lovely creation.  May our yard be a gathering spot for kids–a safe space.  May it also be a gathering spot for adults–a place of fellowship and acceptance.

I ask your blessing of peace to rest upon this home and this household, Lord.  May all who enter know they are loved by you and by us.  I ask this in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen.

A Short Prayer for Our New Neighbors

God, as we move into our new home, I want to pray for our new neighbors.  May you guide our paths to cross so we can introduce ourselves.  We want to get to know them and form some type of relationship with each of them.

Help us to be good neighbors, to see where we may be of help to them over the next weeks and months.  I ask for you to enable us to form community with our neighbors, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Thoughts

You’ve bought a home. Perhaps you’re in the process of purchasing it, or about to move in.  I hope these prayers will be helpful at whatever point in the journey you are toward homeownership.

When we get a house, we naturally want it to be more than a place we sleep and store our stuff and keep our possessions safe.  We may have hopes and dreams for what we’d like to do in our homes including teaching our children to have a strong relationship with God and building a bond with your husband or wife.

May your home be like the one in scripture, “My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest” (Isaiah 32.18, NIV).

Whatever your home is, it is more than walls, and foundation and roof and wiring, and plumbing.  It is a place God has provided for you.  It is a place where you seek to have love and grace reign.

May you claim the promise of this truth, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91.1-2, NIV).

These prayers are a resource to you and we encourage you to share them with your friends who may be buying a new home too.  Let the confidence and clarity you’ve gained through prayer be available to them as well.  Of course, you are invited to share your own prayer requests down below.
