Searching for prayers to pray for your pet’s surgery? Need a prayer for your dog’s surgery or your cat’s surgery?
We’ve selected six prayers for a pet’s surgery to help you in your time of nervousness regarding your animal companion. You may have a traditional pet like a cat, dog, or bird, or perhaps a more unique pet like a reptile or fish. Whatever your pet companion may be, it is a creature you love and care for a great deal.

It’s not uncommon for pets to need surgery. Now that your pet is facing surgery, you may be anxious and scared of what may happen. You want your pet to come through the surgery without any complications. You don’t want your pet to die. All of these concerns (and more!) are worthy of your attention and prayers.
Even scripture supports you caring for your pet, as we see in the Wisdom literature of Proverbs:
“The righteous care for the needs of their animals,
but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel” (Proverbs 12.10, NIV).
I’ve had several dogs in my lifetime and a couple have had to have surgery to take care of a health problem. I know I was very concerned before the surgery took place. My little furry buddy might not be the same dog afterwards. I prayed for the surgery and my dog and the veterinarian doing the surgery. My dog recovered well and lived another several years before passing away peacefully.
I’m glad I took the time to pray, not so much because a good outcome happened (which was great), but more because I wanted to share my concern with God. I had comfort and peace knowing that God had listened to my desperation and I wasn’t alone. I share this because I want to encourage you to pray about your pet.
I want to invite you to pray for your pet’s surgery. The prayers here may not cover exactly what your pet is facing, but you can alter the prayers accordingly. But do pray! Invite others to pray these prayers with you as well. You may want to share the outcome of your prayers down below if you wish.
A Short Prayer for Pet Surgery
Dear God, I pray to you about my pet’s surgery. We brought her into the vet’s office this morning and are now waiting for them to begin. Please guide the veterinarian and his assistant as they operate on (pet’s name). Give them clear eyesight and steady hands.
Please help us keep calm as we wait, as all of this is out of our control now. We place (pet’s name) in your hands. In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
Prayer for Your Dog’s Surgery
Lord, our dog is having surgery to correct some internal problems. He goes in tomorrow for a pretty involved surgery, according to the vet. We have some medicine to help (dog’s name) rest tonight, so thank you for that. I wish I had some medicine to help me rest as well because I am a nervous wreck.
(Pet’s name) has been my faithful companion for so many years and I’d hate to have something happen to him as a result of this surgery, Lord. I’m coming to you in prayer because I don’t know what else I can do, which apparently isn’t much. Please help my dog come through this surgery okay.
I pray for the vet the anesthesia and the recovery. I pray for the surgery to go smoothly, with no complications and that there be no infections of any kind. I know he’s just a dog, Lord, but he’s an important part of my life, so I pray these things in the strong name of Jesus, Amen.
Prayer for Your Cat’s Surgery
Dear God, my little fur baby cat is scheduled for surgery later this week. She seems to be having some intestinal problems that cannot be addressed in any other way, because we’ve tried for the past several weeks.
She’s such a warm presence in my life, Lord. I realize she’s an animal and not a person, but her feline companionship is quite a comfort to me on many days. I thank you for the ministry that pets provide to us humans in so many small but meaningful ways.
I thank you for our veterinarian who has been patient to exhaust non-surgical options to find a solution. I pray (cat’s name) comes through the surgery with flying colours and her recovery is complete. I’m praying for my cat, partly for her, and partly for me–I need your peace in these moments, God. I lift this prayer for my cat, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Prayer for Your Bird’s Surgery
Lord Jesus, I’ve had my bird (name) for a few years now and he’s always been fine. But lately, he’s been not his normal self and my veterinarian said my bird needs avian surgery.
To my understanding, the surgery is somewhat complicated because it’s different than surgery on a cat or a dog. So, I pray for (bird’s name) as he enters this surgery this afternoon. I pray for the surgeon to have steady hands as she undertakes this very delicate procedure on my bird.
I feel a bit silly and naive as I just never thought my bird would ever need surgery of any kind and now he does. And I don’t know what to feel or think at the moment. Please, God, send your Spirit to give me peace in these next couple of hours. I’m worried about my pet bird.
Some people haven’t really understood why I have a pet bird and not a cat or dog, but I love (bird’s name). He sings to me as I leave for work and when I return. His songs are music to my soul. Thank you for my pet, Lord, and may you bring him through surgery in good shape. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
Prayer for Surgery for Non-Traditional Pet
Dear God in heaven, I thank you that you created so many wonderful creatures, including my pet (type of non-traditional pet). I like his uniqueness and interesting behaviour. But now he needs surgery, and I’m worried.
I am so grateful my veterinarian is skilled in caring for non-traditional pets like (pet’s name). It’s his skill and diagnosis that allows me to know that my pet will be taken care of in a thorough manner.
I pray for his surgery this Monday. I pray for there to be no complications or emergencies that pop up. I pray for the recovery time afterwards. I ask, God, for you to help me see how I’m going to pay for this as well because it’s not cheap! I know you will provide because you always have.
I lift this prayer to you for my pet in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Prayer for Pet After Surgery
Lord God, my pet has had surgery and came through it well. The surgery was a success! Thank you so much for that tremendously good news! The veterinarian told us that while the surgery did what it was supposed to do, now the hard part of the healing begins–the recovery.
Since our pet is so active, we have to keep her down and not move around too much. The medicine we have will help with that, but I ask you to enable each of us to be diligent to not get her excited or somehow forget she’s recovering.
I ask that you help us focus our attention as we do all of the post-surgery care of her surgical area and keep it clean and disinfected. Help us realize that getting our furry friend back to normal rests on our ability to make her recovery smooth and complete.
I thank you for the financial provision to pay for the surgery, for the vet’s schedule to be open to do the surgery, and for the time off from work I was given on the day of the surgery. You have provided in so many ways, Lord. I ask that you continue your healing in our pet in her recovery, in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Final Thoughts
When we decide to get a pet, we are choosing to open our hearts up to another living creature, to care for it, and to love it. When that living creature, who listens to us and loves us back unconditionally, gets sick and needs surgery, we may face some moments of indecision. What do we do?
That’s when prayer is vital. Praying to God about your pet’s surgery can bring peace of mind, clarity of thought, and comfort to frayed nerves.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God” (Luke 12.6, NIV).
If God cares about little birds out in the wild, then he also cares about your fur baby, your little buddy, and your pet companion. And, since we can bring all of our concerns to God in prayer, that includes praying for surgery for your pet.
