When we can’t manage our lives, prayer helps turn us toward God, who restores us to sanity. If we could stay sober on our own, we would have done it by now, wouldn’t we?

You don’t have to pray the exact words in the prayers below if they don’t sound right for your circumstance. But you can use them to get started speaking to God. They are written to offer hope to you. They are written in an honest, authentic style so you don’t have to pretend.
Keeping your sobriety is indeed a journey, one day at a time. Remaining sober can also occur one hour at a time, and these prayers are intended to get you through this hour right now. Pray them. A Short Prayer to Remain Sober
Dear God, I need your help to remain sober right now, in this moment. I want to give in to my addiction but I know what will happen if I do. Please help me, God. I can’t do this without you, because I have no power to resist the addiction on my own.
I just want to remain sober for today, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer for Sobriety
God, this is the only prayer I know, so I’m going to pray it, asking you to use it to help keep me sober.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen.
Prayer for Sobriety in the Morning
Dear Jesus, it’s a new day this morning. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow has not happened yet, so I pray to you as I awaken this morning. I want to keep my sobriety.
I’m coming to you in prayer because I have no where else to turn as the sun rises again. I don’t want to think about whether I can stay sober for this whole day, God. I just want to make it through the next few hours of this morning.
I have no strength to conquer this. I admit my weakness, trusting that you will guide me, hour by hour. Help me God, my Rock and Redeemer. In the strong name of Jesus I pray, Amen
Prayer for Sobriety at Midday
Thank you God, for getting me through this morning. It’s around the middle of the day now and I’m feeling a desire to drink, to even out the stress of this day so far.
I plead with you God to be my power, to be my strength, to protect me from myself. I clearly cannot manage my life without depending on you, so catch me God. Carry me through this mid-day struggle to stay sober.
Even as I turn to you in prayer, I can believe that you are helping me. I’m leaning on my relationship to you, my Helper and Healer, and not my relationship with alcohol. Remind me of how far you’ve brought me in this journey of sobriety. I ask these things in the name of Jesus, my higher power, Amen.
Prayer for Sobriety at Night
God, the night hours are the worse. After work and before bed were the times when I used to drink so much. I really wanted to numb the pain of the day, take the edge off whatever stress I’d encountered at work or wherever I’d been that day.
Help me remain close to you, God. I pray my relationship to you is stronger than my relationship to alcohol, Lord. I don’t want to feel empty at night, so I ask you to fill me with your presence, with your peace, with your mercy.
I have things to do tomorrow, Lord, that won’t get done if I give up my sobriety tonight. I know because I’ve done it too many times to count. I want a new life, a life of sobriety. I realize I can only have a sober life by throwing myself to you. I need you to be strong in me, when I cannot even muster the desire to be strong.
Help me stay sober tonight, God, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer to Remain Sober at Work
God, I thank you for this job I have. I have a purpose each day to get up and go to work. I have an income and responsibility now. I am so grateful to you for providing this job for me.
And so, I pray for you to help me remain sober at work, Lord. I’m facing a struggle, as my co-workers like to grab a drink at lunch or right after we clock out for the day. I can’t do it, God.
I don’t want them to think I’m anti-social or anything, but I just can’t be around that kind of scene right now. I’ve got to keep my sobriety, Lord. You’ve brought this far and I see how admitting I’m powerless to this addiction got me on the journey of recovery.
I want to keep taking the steps forward, working the steps as I go. I want to remain sober, but I also want to drink, God. I need this job and I want to keep it. Help me, Lord, to remain sober at my job. In the strong name of Jesus, Amen.
Prayer to Remain Sober at Home
Dear God, Father in heaven, being at home and remaining sober is tough. When I’m running errands, seeing friends, or working at my job, I have any number of things to focus my attention and energy.
But when I get home, especially on the weekends, I tend to look at what I don’t have and that old desire for a drink comes up, eliciting all those false promises. I won’t be happier if I drink at home, nor will I be less bored. I pray for truth to fill my thoughts, Lord.
Let me see purpose and meaning simply by remaining in relationship with you, my higher power. Let me be strong in the knowledge that I am sober only because of you and the order and sanity you’ve restored to my messed-up life.
Help me stay sober while I’m at home, in this hour, and the hours after that. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Concluding Thoughts
Getting sober is a hard thing to do. We have to give up our relationship with our addiction, be it alcohol or something else. Remaining sober, keeping our sobriety, is also hard. It requires letting go of our control of our life and our self.
Can we let God be our power? Can we allow God to manage our lives, which we have so spectacularly messed up because of our addiction? Prayer is a gateway to connect with God in a deeper way. Praying is an action that humbles us as we speak, reminding us that we are powerless to deal with the addiction on our own.
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tested beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10.13, NIV).
We can work the steps and we can go to meetings and we can do the work of recovery. But we’re fooling ourselves, and the people in our lives we love, if we don’t come to grips with how much we need God. Praying the prayers above, or praying your own, allows us to say, “I need you God.”
