8 Bold Prayers to Expose Lies

Last Updated on October 19, 2023 by Emma

Did you know that lying regularly leads to higher blood pressure, increased stress hormones in the bloodstream and other physical problems?  Is it any wonder that you would want to pray to expose lies?

These eight bold prayers to expose lies center around the main areas in our life and society.  You are welcome to modify any of the prayers to suit your specific prayer need.  The prayers can also serve as a starting point for you to pray about exposing lies in other areas or situations you face.

On average, most people tell a lie four times a day.  If that average holds, then that equates to 28 lies a week, about 120 lies a month, or 1,460 lies a year!  Seeing those numbers is startling, isn’t it?

“I don’t lie that much,” you might exclaim.  “There’s no way I tell nearly 1,500 lies a year,” you may think. Perhaps you are correct.  Try this thought experiment:  Think about every single conversation you’ve had today, whether by voice or by text or email.  Was there anything in those conversations that was not true?

This is not intended to be accusatory, of course!  It’s more of suggestion for each of us to be honest with ourselves about, well, our honesty.  If we are wanting to pray to expose lies around us, we’ll want to expose falsehoods in ourselves as well.

I could list many, but I’ll share just a couple of realities from scripture about lies.

The Lord detests lying lips,
but he delights in people who are trustworthy” (Proverbs 12.22, NIV).

And,

An honest witness does not deceive,
but a false witness pours out lies” (Proverbs 14.5, NIV).

As you begin to pray about lies being made known and brought to light, be aware that God may help you see inconsistencies in your own life too.  There’s no need to fear this, because it is the action of a loving Heavenly Father who wants us to be as he created us to be.  Pray with certainty and pray with confidence!

Prayer to Expose Lies at Church

Dear God, I come to you in prayer, asking that you expose the lies that are being spoken at church.  I don’t believe the leadership are being honest about the finances of the church or the struggles the congregation is facing.

I know we are all human and we are fallen, which is why I pray to you for guidance and the light of truth.  I know the leaders may worry about people leaving but it would be better if they could just be upfront with us and trust you to work it out in grace and mercy.  I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies in Our Family

Lord, my family is a mess and it’s been a mess for more than a generation.  There are so many “family secrets” that no one wants to talk about and it’s destroying our family from the inside.

I just want the truth to be known so we could heal and move forward, but the power of these lies is strong.  I pray to you to help use expose these lies and bring forth healing as they are revealed.  I ask you for this through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies in Our Marriage

Lord God, I am very concerned about my marriage.  I have not been truthful with my wife, and I know she is lying to me about certain things.  We are living now in a superficial reality where we dance around these lies and pretend like everything is okay.

It is not okay.  I can’t handle the burden of my lies but I’m afraid that if I am fully honest, she won’t be and our marriage with be destroyed.  Please help us both to bring forth the lies out of the darkness and into your glorious, healing light of love.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies in Our City

God, I generally like where I live, but lately I have been frustrated with all of the lies that are being spoken in our city. Whether it’s the elected officials or business leaders, no one seems to want to open up about the crisis we face.

Everybody wants to try and cover over the negative things that need to be addressed so that it doesn’t affect the local economy.  I pray that you expose these lies, Lord.  I pray that honesty wins the day and people’s fear will be overcome.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies at School

Father God, can you help me?  The students at my school are telling lies about other students, and even some of the teachers.  This is bothering me quite a bit.  I cringe every time someone comes up to me to start a conversation because I’m afraid they’re going to tell me some lie about another student and I don’t want to hear it.

I don’t know why they think that telling lies about other people is helpful.  The culture at school now is toxic and people don’t seem to trust each other much.  It makes it hard to be at school and do my work.  I just want there to be truth.  I ask that the lies and the people telling those lies be exposed and that their behavior changes.  I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies in Our State

God, I don’t want to bother you with this, but I believe that you want us to pray to you about everything in our lives, so hear goes.

I come to you, asking that you expose the lies that are happening at the state level.  We’ve had one disaster or major incident after another in the last six months and no one has any answers as to what is being done.  Lies fly back and forth as everyone blames everyone else.

I just want honesty.  I want to know what is really going on.  I pray that people would be truthful, instead of worrying about what telling the truth would mean for their career or ambitions.  I pray this in the name of Jesus, the Truth, the Way, and the Life, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies in Our Nation

Lord God, I pray for our nation.  We are awash with lies across our land.  Whether it is the government, all of the political parties, the financial sector, entertainment, or just individuals, no one appears to want to tell the truth.

I pray for the lies and the people telling the lies to be revealed.  I pray that this would be us versus them, but an actual truth-telling.  We’ve become so accustomed to taking sides and not believing each other, it makes me wonder if people would recognize the truth.

Please helps us Lord. You are the source of all truth. Expose the lies in our nation and let it start with us.  In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Prayer to Expose Lies in My Thinking

God, I don’t think of myself as a liar but I know that I don’t always tell the truth.  I exaggerate or I don’t tell the whole story, or I just outright lie to someone.  I find myself lying to myself in my thought life, telling myself things that are not true.

I ask for your help, Lord, to expose the lies in my own thinking and in my own life.  May I hear your Spirit check me when I am about to say something untrue.  I pray that you renew my mind in Christ, to root out false thoughts so I can be free.

I don’t want to be bound to lies anymore, Lord.  I want to be free in you and honest with others.  Help me to speak truth, in love, in the coming days.  I pray this prayer and make these requests through Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen.

Consider This

No one likes to find out that they’ve been lied to.  And, if we’re honest with ourselves, we don’t like it when we lie because one lie usually leads to another lie to help support the first lie.  It all snowballs and before we know it, there’s this deceptive reality in the middle of our situation.

Praying to expose lies is a sign of our passion for truth, for wanting the truth of Christ to be seen and known in our circumstances.  In order for us to be congruent with our prayers we must make sure that we speak honestly and openly when we communicate, as the Apostle Paul reminds us,

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4.29, NIV).

Throughout the Bible there are admonitions against telling lies.  There are also many teachings on speaking the truth.  It should be apparent to us (if we follow Jesus Christ) that lying is to be avoided.  It also is clear that we should want lies to be exposed and seen out in the open.

This can be difficult to pray about when lying seems so frequent.  It can feel as if people don’t realize the danger that lying poses.  Perhaps we have become so accustomed to lies that we just accept it.  One time, Jesus was debating  people who were following him, in regards to truth and how real truth can set you free.  I share the exchange at length so that you have the full context.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.

39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.”

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God” (John 8.31-47, NIV).

We can tend to try and explain away a lie, or why we lie about certain things.  But Jesus makes it clear that lies (“white lies,” “half-truths,” omitting facts, etc.) are not from God, nor from God.  That hard truth is often hard for us to accept.  Yet, we can be encouraged as we remind ourselves that if Jesus is our Savior, then we belong to him and we are being transformed into the likeness of Christ.  We don’t have to act like we once did.

Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3.9-10, NIV).

So, as we pray for lies to be exposed in our lives and in our society and in our relationships, we are opening ourselves up to the Holy Spirit to be changed into our new selves.

Do you want to be transformed through Christ?  Do you want to speak more truth and tell less lies?  Do you wish that more lies were revealed and rooted out?  Then pray for lies to be exposed in your own life, your society, and in your relationships.

We invite you to grow closer to God as you pray and show your appreciation for this life. We also welcome your comments and prayer requests below.
